Athens, Ga.—UMBC swimming and diving closed the gap on Incarnate Word, only trailing by 19 points after day two. Gregor Spoerlein set a school record in the 50 free, breaking a record he set last year.
Spoerlein set the record last year with a time of 20.26, before breaking the record in a time of 20.05. Gregor touched in first place in the B finals.
Felix Richtsfeld took silver in the 500 free, touching the wall in a time of 4:26.26. Also finishing with a silver medal was Nikola Trajkovic in the 200 IM. Trajkovic finished with a time of 1:46.63.
The quartet of Ahmed Wahby, Miles Ruttan, Jared Vance and Bryan Mattingly took third in the 200 free relay with a time of 1:23.23.
On the boards, a triad of Retrievers finished five, six, seven on the 3 meter boards. Alex Stewart took fifth with a score of 242.15, while Leo Buoye (228.50) and Elijah Wright (226.55) placed sixth and seventh.
Incarnate Word continues to lead with 548 points, with UMBC on their heels with 529 points. Old Dominion and Gardner-Webb are third and fourth with 524.5 and 394 points each. Florida Atlantic (345), NJIT (219.5), Howard (154) and VMI (134) round out the field.
Day three continues with prelims at 10 a.m. and finals at 6 p.m. from Athens.
