Albany, N.Y.—The UMBC track and field team got off to a strong start after day one in Albany. Several Retrievers qualified for final heats tomorrow. After day one, the women are in fourth with 36 points, and the men are in fifth with 28 points.
A trio of Retrievers earned America East gold on Saturday. Hassan Omar, Vincent Rentzsch and Alisha Beeman all took gold in their respective events. Omar won a very tactical 10,000m run, finishing in a time of 31:36.82. Rentzsch continued his strong spring in the javelin, tossing a 70.14m, a full 10m ahead of second place. Beeman rounded out the trio of winners with a jump of 1.70m in the high jump.
On the women's side, Mercedes Jackson earned the top spot in both the 100m and 200m dash qualifying. Jackson ran an 11.67 in the 100m, and a 23.80 in the 200m to place first heading to the finals tomorrow. Mercedes Tillman ran a 12.02 to qualify for the finals of the 100m. Tillman also took first place in the 400m qualifying with a time of 54.90, setting a new school record in the process. Kalane Abbey also qualified for the event, crossing the tape in a time of 56.77.
Sarah Daly was the top qualifier for the 1,500m run, finishing in 4:39.03, a full two seconds ahead of second place.
A trio of Retrievers are moving on to the finals in the 400m hurdles. Paulette Fogle led the triumvirate with a time of 1:00.28. She was followed by Mary Katherine Kulp (1:01.54) and Essence Fredericks (1:01.55).
The men saw Daryian Miles finish first in the 100m dash qualifying. Miles finished in a time of 10.76. Randolph Patrice (22.07), Miles (21.84) and Darrius Oxley (22.28) earned spots in the finals of the 200m dash.
Oxley, John Oputa, and Erick Soetje are moving on the finals in the 400m dash, qualifying with times of 50.31, 49.07 and 50.00 respectively. Purcell Freeman and Ehab Abutaleb are in the finals for the 110m hurdles, crossing the tape in times of 15.31 and 15.34 to move on to Saturday's finals.
Thor Serafenas earned silver in the hammer throw. His best throw of 56.45 earned his the silver medal.
The final day of competition will commence at 10:00 a.m. on Sunday, May 3 at Albany.
