UMBC Women's Lacrosse Falls to Towson, 11-6

Box Score

BALTIMORE – UMBC women's lacrosse freshman Carolyn Jamison (Westminster, Md./Westminster), the reigning America East Rookie of the Week, registered two goals in Tuesday afternoon's non-conference matchup at UMBC Stadium against local-rival Towson, but the Retrievers were unable to overcome a slow start, falling to the Tigers, 11-6.

UMBC's slow start allowed the Tigers to enjoy a three-goal cushion, leading to a three-score deficit at the break, 5-2. Jamison scored the first two goals of the second half for the Retrievers, but Towson registered six of the final goals to hold off UMBC. The Retrievers turned the ball over 21 times in the contest en route to being outshot, 30-19.

UMBC falls to 7-6 on the season, while Towson improves to 6-5.

Sarah Maloof put the Tigers out in front, 1-0, 6:17 into the contest with her sixth goal of the year. Maloof finished high on UMBC goalkeeper Kelsey Major (Eldersburg, Md./Liberty) to extend the lead to 2-0 with 18:42 to go in the opening half. Maloof continued to do damage, registering the hat trick less than half way through the first half, to put Towson on top, 3-0.

UMBC sophomore Jennie Milligan (Crofton, Md./South River) netted a shot into the top right corner off a pass from red-shirt sophomore Sam Nolan (Fallston, Md./Fallston) to get the Retrievers on the board with 13:51 to go before the break. A little over a minute later, red-shirt senior Andi Raymond had a response for the Tigers, blasting home her team-leading 18th of the season to extend the lead back to 4-1.

UMBC freshman Caitlin Miller (Frederick Md./Tuscarora) brought the Retrievers back within two, 4-2, on a shot into the bottom left corner of the net off a pass from Nolan with 4:28 to go in the half. Towson came back with the response, this time on a free position goal from senior Paige Duncan to give the Tigers a 5-2 lead at the break.

The Dawgs struck first in the second half on a shot and goal from Jamison. She added her second of the day 1:31 later on a free position score to bring the Retrievers within one, 5-4, less than 10 minutes into the period, but that is as close as UMBC would come on the day.

Raymond put an end to the Retriever run, coming around from behind the goal and receiving a pass from Jenna Kerr to net her second goal of the day to extend the lead back to two, 6-4. The Tigers took advantage of an UMBC turnover for the transition goal as Kerr dumped off a pass to senior Taylor Moore for the score to extend the lead back to three, 7-4, with 13:02 remaining. Red-shirt sophomore Michelle Gildea struck 1:32 later for the Tigers' third score of the half.

UMBC senior Abby Wilson (Bel Air, Md./Fallston) kept her scoring streak alive, extending it to 18 games with her team-leading 24th goal of the year with 8:25 remaining in the contest to keep the Retrievers within striking distance, 8-5, but off the free position attempt, Maloof dished a pass to Kerr for the answer with her first collegiate goal.

The Retrievers continued to fight as sophomore Caroline Haggerty (Bel Air, Md./John Carroll School) netted her third goal of the season, but again Towson had the response with Raymond's third of the day to preserve the four-goal lead, 10-6. Moore converted on a pass from Raymond with 1:03 on the clock to close out the scoring. Raymond finished with a game-high five points for the Tigers, while Maloof added four points.

Major (6-6) made seven stops on the day for the Retrievers, while Towson goalkeeper Kelsea Donnelly (6-5) made eight saves.

UP NEXT FOR THE RETRIEVERS: The Retrievers return to America East action on Saturday, April 11 when UMBC celebrates Senior Day at UMBC Stadium against UMass Lowell.
