Retrievers Close Out Morgan State Legacy/Larry Ellis Meets on Saturday

Baltimore, Md.—The UMBC track and field teams closed out competition at the Morgan State Legacy Meet on Saturday. The women's team finished in third place and the men finished in fifth on the day.

The women were led once again by Mercedes Jackson who finished second in the 100m dash. Jackson finished as the second fastest runner in the prelims with a time of 11.85. She turned in a time of 11.58 to take second in the finals.

The quartet of Mercedes Tillman, Mercedes Jackson, Marie Yuille, and D'Nique Phillip took gold in the 4x100m relay, tying the school record with a time of 46.19. Paulette Fogle finished third in the 400m dash in a time of 55.01.

On the distance side, Harmony Roche turned in a fourth place performance in the 5,000m run, crossing the tape in a time of 18:31.84. Tillman, Fogle, Briana Young, and Kalane Abbey took second in the 4x400m relay with a time of 3:47.01.

Alisha Beeman took gold in the heptathlon with a score of 3,342 over the seven events. Beeman ranks third on the all-time list with her performance. Ozi Edokobi led the field events, taking second in the shot put with a toss of 13.96m. She then took fourth in the discus with a throw of 41.82m.

The men were led by John Rybak, who turned in an eleventh place finish in the 110m hurdle prelims. Rybak finished with a time of 15.07. He then finished ninth in the 400m hurdles with a time of 53.88. Ty Thronson and Rhys Burgett led the distance runners with a twelfth and eighth place finish in their respective events. Thronson crossed the line in 1:55.69 in the 800m, while Burgett finished in 4:07.08 in the 1,500m.

At the Larry Ellis Inivtational, Sarah Daly ran the second best 1,500m run in school history with a time of 4:30.69. 

Sophia Cologer shattered the school record in the 3,000m steeplechase, finishing with a time of 10:37.89, becoming the first Retriever to go under eleven minutes. The previous best was set by Cologer earlier this year, at 11:00.36.

The Retrievers will head to the Penn Relays on April 23-25 in Philadelphia. The iconic meet will be held at the University of Pennsylvania.
