Retrievers Shine on Day One of ECAC/IC4A Championships

Boston, Mass.—UMBC track and field took part in the ECAC/IC4A Championships on Saturday at Boston University. Several Retrievers had school record breaking performances, and many qualified for finals tomorrow.

The women were paced by Mercedes Jackson, who continued her run of success this year. Jackson qualified first in the 60m dash, setting a meet record with a time of 7.35. Mercedes Tillman ran a 7.76 in the event as well.

Paulette Fogle broke her school record in the 500m dash prelims with a time of 1:13.43. That time was good enough to qualify for the finals. Mary Katherine Kulp was also a part of the school record breakers, crossing the tape in 2:11.22 in the 800m run. The quartet of Tillman, Fogle, Funmi Daramola, and Kalane' Abbey broke the school record in the 4x400m relay with a  time of 3:43.76 to qualify for the finals tomorrow.

In the field, Alisha Beeman and Ozi Edokobi led the charge, with Beeman placing tenth in the high jump (1.68m) and Edokobi placing ninth in the weighted throw (16.43m).

The men were led by Daryian Miles, who qualified for the finals of the 60m dash tomorrow. Miles finished in 7.03 in the prelims, and 6.92 in the semis to move to tomorrow's finals.

Hassan Omar earned an 11th place finish in the 5,000m run, crossing the tape in 14:31.45. The 4x800 relay team of Ty Thronson, Charles Bolinger, Brandon Bejarano, and Nick Johnson shattered the school record with a time of 7:35.30, to move on to the finals.

Thor Serafenas finished in 13th place in the weighted throw with a toss of 17.30m.

The Retrievers are back on the track tomorrow, with the final day of the ECAC/IC4A Championships. The meet begins at 9:30 a.m. with the field events, followed by the running events at 11:30 a.m.
