BALTIMORE – UMBC women's lacrosse picked up its first victory of the season behind a two-goal effort from senior attacker Abby Wilson (Bel Air, Md./Fallston) to defeat Mount St. Mary's, 5-4, on a snowy Saturday afternoon at UMBC Stadium.

The Retrievers scored four straight goals in the first half en route to outscoring the Mount, 4-2, in the opening 30 minutes of play. Wilson added her second score in a shortened second half, which represented the game-winner for the Dawgs. Sophomore Jennie Milligan (Crofton, Md./South River) chipped in a two-point effort to help UMBC improve to 1-2 on the season, while the Mountaineers drop their season-opener.

Mount St. Mary's junior Sam Sparr opened the game's scoring with the first of three-straight free position goals to give the Mount a 1-0 advantage 1:03 into the contest. The Retrievers wasted no time tying it up in its first of four straight scores, as rookie Tianna Wallpher (Ellicott City, Md./Mt. Hebron) netted her first collegiate goal to tie up the contest at one apiece with 27:17 to go in the half.

Wilson gave the Retrievers their first lead of the game with 12:23 to go in the first, 2-1, connecting on a free position attempt. Freshman Laura Osborne (Chesapeake Beach, Md./Huntingtown) and Milligan each chipped in their second scores of the season to help UMBC take a 4-1 lead with 4:47 to go before the half.

Mountaineers' sophomore Sammie Knapp put a stop to the Retrievers' surge before the break, netting her first of two scores on the afternoon to pull the Mount within two, 4-2, at the half.

Wilson started off the second-half scoring with her second goal of the game, this one coming off a helper from Milligan 7:33 into the period. Mount St. Mary's scored back-to-back goals, the first from Knapp on a free position attempt and the second unassisted from Erin Seipp, to pull within one, 5-4, with 3:37 to go in the contest, but the Retrievers were able to maintain possession down the stretch to hang on for the victory.

UMBC goalkeeper Kelsey Major (Eldersburg, Md./Liberty) made two saves en route to her first collegiate victory. Mount goalkeeper Steph Rurkowski made five stops in the loss.

GAME NOTE: Due to weather conditions, the second half was shortened to 18 minutes.
