Retrievers Fight, But Fall 10-9 in Overtime to La Salle

Box Score

Baltimore, Md.—The UMBC women's lacrosse team suffered their second overtime loss of the season, 10-9, to La Salle on Saturday. The Retrievers made a big push, outscoring the Explorers 5-2 in the second half, but could not get the finisher in overtime.

The Explorers (1-0) got on the board first, scoring just two minutes into the contest, but UMBC (0-2)answered with a goal from Alyssa Semones (Westminster, Md./Westminster/Penn State). From there, La Salle scored two back-to-back goals, giving them a two score lead.

The Retrievers would get three more tallies in the half, thanks in part to Abby Wilson (Bel Air, Md./Fallston), Carolyn Jamison (Westminster, Md./Westminster), and Rachel Benzing (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial), but La Salle would be in front 7-4 at the break.

In the second stanza, UMBC came alive on offense, rattling off four straight goals to open the half. Jamison would get her second of the day, off a Marissa Davey (Ellicott City, Md./Marriotts Ridge) assist. Jamison would then set up Wilson just a minute later, before a free position goal from Laura Osbourne (Chesapeake Beach, Md./Huntingtown) tied the game at seven all. Sam Nolan (Fallston, Md./Fallston) capped the run with an unassisted on the man up to give the Retrievers their first lead of the game with 18 minutes to play.

Wilson would push UMBC in front 9-8, but Brittany Edwards had the answer for La Salle, as the Retrievers would head to their second overtime contest in as many games.

Neither team could find the goal in the first three minutes, but it was Erin McCabe who gave La Salle the go-ahead goal, taking the Saturday matinee, 10-9.

Wilson led the Retrievers with three goals, while Jamison scored twice, adding one assist.

The Retrievers are back in action on Wednesday, February 18 when they host cross-town rival Towson. The matchup with the Tigers is slated for 4:30 p.m. from UMBC Stadium.
