Fairfax, Va.—UMBC closed out the Patriot Invitational with a handful of individual victories on Saturday. The Retrievers had a strong meet all weekend long, winning the event for the first time since 2012-13. The women took home third place.
The men were led by Alexander Gliese and Gregor Spoerlein, who picked up a wins for the Dawgs. Gliese took home gold in the 200 back, touching in with a time of 1:48.54. Spoerlein finished in first place in the 100 free, clocking in at 44.92 breaking a ten year old record in the event.
Kyle Paxton got to the medal stand with a first place finish in the 200 breast. Paxton finished the race in a time of 2:06.13.
The women were led once again by Emily Escobedo, who picked up a win in the 200 breast. The New York native finished the race in a time of 2:11.73, besting her prelim time of 2:13.61. Escobedo broke her own meet record in the event, while also hitting a NCAA "B" Cut qualifying time in the process.
Laura Massicotte earned a second place finish in the 1,650 free, clocking in at 17:18.33.
The Retrievers will return to the pool in January, with a meet against the Howard Bison on January 9 at 2:30 p.m. The meet will be held at the UMBC Aquatic Complex on campus.
