Tulsa, OK – UMBC juniors Justin Carter (Randallstown, Md.) and Jaan Kononov (Talinn, Estonia) advanced to the third round of pre-qualifying in the 2014 Saint Francis Health System ITA Men's All-American Championships. Classmate Melker Svard (Gothenburg, Sweden) won his first round match, but lost a tough three-setter in the second round.
Kononov opened play with a 7-5, 6-3 victory over Muddappa Appanervanda of Illinois State, then rallied to defeat Simon Pritchard of Kennesaw State, 3-6, 6-3, 6-3. He will face Jonny Rigby of SIU-Carbondale in third round play on Sunday.
Carter, the No. 3 seed in pre-qualifying, had a first-round bye and then took out Markus Schultz of NJIT, 6-4, 7-6(6). He will now oppose Logan Staggs of Northwestern in the third round.
Svard opened with an impressive 6-3, 6-4 victory over LSU's Boris Arias. He then engaged in a tough battle with Boise State's Toby Mitchell, but fell, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4.
The qualifying draw opens on Monday and the main draw begins on Thursday, Oct. 2.
