BALTIMORE- The UMBC men's tennis team extended its winning streak to four straight with a 4-0 victory over Howard in the first match played outdoors at the UMBC Tennis Complex. The teams did not compete in doubles competition and the match has halted due to rain after the Retrievers had earned the fourth point.
The Retrievers improved to 6-3 on the season, while the Bison slipped to 0-8.
"The men got out of the gate quickly and played well throughout the competition today," said head coach Rob Hubbard. "They continue to be well prepared for their matches and hopefully we can continue on this streak."
Sophomore Melker Svard (Gothenburg, Sweden) got on the board first for the hosts, defeating Ismael Kaouache, 6-1, 6-3 at No. 2 singles. Classmate Alex Drean (Bayonne, France) extended the lead to 2-0 with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Myron Davis at the No. 3 position.
After No. 1 sophomore Justin Carter (Randallstown, Md.) marked his return to the lineup with a straight set victory over William Jones, sophomore Eliott Loubatie (Paris, France) clinched the match for the Retrievers with a convincing 6-0, 6-1 victory over Laguna Foster at the No. 4 position.
"Eliott Loubatie has proven to be a reliable performer in the line-up and Melker Svard also continues to impress with his fourth consecutive strong outing," said Hubbard.
The Retrievers are slated to return to action on Friday, March 8 when they host George Mason.
