Box Score BALTIMORE- The 12th-ranked Stony Brook Seawolves
burst out to an 8-1 lead and held off a UMBC second-half rally to
prevail over the Retrievers, 15-9, in an America East Conference
match-up at UMBC Stadium.
Both teams came into the contest at 2-0 in America East. Stony
Brook extended its winning streak to six straight and remained
perfect at 3-0 in the league and 11-2 overall, while UMBC slipped
to 8-4, 2-1.
UMBC was paced by junior attacker Shannon
Harkey (Purcellville, Va./Loudon Valley/Florida), who tied her
career high with three goals and a pair of
assists. Sophomore attacker Abby Wilson (Bel
Air, Md./Fallston) was the other Retriever to score multiple times
as she added a pair of goals.
Stony Brook was led by senior attacker Janine Hillier, who
scored four goals and added an assist, while senior midfielder
Demmianne Cook recorded three goals and a pair of helpers.
Cook won the opening draw of the game, drove the lane and fed
Hillier for an SBU goal just nine seconds into the contest. The
Seawolves scored their second goal 49 seconds in before Retriever
junior defender Devan Hibbs (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown
West) scored her first collegiate goal on a free position 3:31 into
the contest.
But then Stony Brook went on a 6-0 run over a span of 16 minutes
to lead 8-1 on Cook's 60thgoal of the season with 10:09
to play in the first half.
UMBC cut the deficit to 9-3 at the break, but Hillier scored
twice as the visitors moved out in front, 12-4 with 20:14
remaining.
Twenty-two seconds later, UMBC sophomore midfielder Alyssa
Semones (Westminster, Md./Westminster/Penn State) started the
Retriever rally, converting a feed from junior middie Kristen
Bilney (Ellicott City, Md./Mount Hebron). Harkey and Wilson
tallied twice in a 5-2 UMBC run which trimmed the deficit back to
14-9 with plenty of time (8:10) remaining.
But the Retrievers lost the ensuing draw and SBU closed the
scoring on a goal with 5:45 remaining.
Stony Brook had a slight edge in shots, 23-22 and draw controls
were even at 13 apiece.
UMBC senior goalkeeper Kendall Mason (Lloyd Harbor,
N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor) had six saves for the hosts, while SBU
junior netminder Frankie Caridi tallied six for the visitors.
Entering the game, Stony Brook led the nation in team defense,
allowing only 4.8 goals per game.
The Retrievers travel to Albany for another league contest on
Sat., April 13.
