freshman attacker Kayley Jones (Catonsville, Md./Mount de
Sales) notched the first goal of her career and finished with her
first collegiate hat trick, but it was not enough as No. 19 Johns
Hopkins defeated the Retrievers 11-5 on Wednesday at the UMBC
Stadium.
The Blue Jays have won three of their last four games and
improve to 9-5 on the season, while UMBC (8-6) has dropped
three-straight for the first time since 2010.
The Retrievers allowed JHU to a five-goal cushion in the opening
half, before junior attacker Shannon
Harkey (Purcellville, Va./Loudoun Valley/Florida) got the
black and gold on the board with a shot into the bottom corner of
the net with 5:26 remaining in the first half.
UMBC notched its second consecutive goal to cut the deficit to
three at 5-2 with 3:25 to go before the break. Following a Blue

Semones (Westminster, Md./Westminster/Penn State) found Jones,
who placed a shot into the top corner for her first score of the
year.
Freshman midfielder Dene' DiMartino got one back for Johns
Hopkins prior to the half, connecting on a free position shot into
the bottom corner of the net, putting the Blue Jays out in front,
6-2.
JHU added two more scores to start the second half, first taking
advantage of an extra-man opportunity on a score from junior
midfielder Sammy Cermack. Classmate Sarah Taylor added a give and
go goal from junior attacker Taylor D'Amore, to take an 8-2
advantage.
The Retrievers tried to chip away at the deficit, with a free
position goal from Semones and Jones' second goal of the contest,
bringing UMBC within four, 8-4, but Johns Hopkins closed the door
on the black and gold comeback with three consecutive scores.
D'Amore and Taylor each finished with five points for the Blue
Jays, while DiMartino tabbed a hat trick in the victory.
JHU held an 11-6 advantage on the draws and outshot UMBC 26-13
in the contest.
