Box Score
BOSTON, Mass. – UMBC women's
lacrosse eliminated a 5-1 second half deficit, outscoring Boston
University 5-1 over the final 20 minutes of regulation, and
completed the come from behind victory with a free position score
from junior midfielder Shannon Harkey (Purcellville,
Va./Loudon Valley/Florida) with three seconds remaining in overtime
as the Retrievers defeated the Terriers, 7-6, in their America East
opener on Saturday afternoon at Nickerson Field.
UMBC picks up its fourth consecutive victory and moves to 7-2 on
the season – its best start through nine games since 1986,
when the Retrievers went on to an 11-2 record. Boston University
moves to 2-5 on the season and 0-1 in conference play.
Although the Retrievers took the 1-0 lead on a pass from junior
Mary Milligan (Edgewater, Md./South River/Anne Arundel CC) and
score from freshman Kris Coppolino (Winter Springs,
Fla./Winter Springs), it was all Terriers the rest of the half,
despite UMBC goalkeeper Kendall Mason (Lloyd Harbor,
N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor) making eight of her 10 saves in the half.
Boston University took a 3-1 advantage into the break following a
pair of goals from junior Elizabeth Morse and one from the squad's
leading goal scorer senior Danielle Etrasco.
BU added to its lead with two more goals from Etrasco, the first
unassisted and the second coming 43 seconds later on a pass from
junior Sydney Godett to make it 5-1 with 27:11 remaining in the
contest.
Sophomore midfielder Alyssa Semones (Westminster,
Md./Westminster/Penn State) got the Retrievers back on the board
with her first score of the afternoon with 20:00 to go to make it
5-2. Three minutes later, UMBC was able to come within two at 5-3,
following a dish from sophomore Abby Wilson (Bel Air,
Md./Fallston) to classmate Jordan Lyons (Peterborough,
Ontario/St. Peter's Secondary).
The Terriers halted the comeback on a goal from sophomore Jenna
Boarman and assist from Etrasco, extending the lead back to three,
6-3, but the Retrievers continued to put pressure on BU goalkeeper
Christina Sheridan, as UMBC racked off 20 shots in the second half
– compared to Boston's seven. The Retrievers came back within
two, 6-4, on a score from Harkey, assisted by Wilson, with 7:34
remaining.
The black and gold made things interesting when it came within
one goal, 6-5, with 5:33 on the clock with Semones second goal of
the contest, her team-leading 22nd of the season.
With the clock winding down, UMBC was forced to pull Mason from
the net and to try and get the game tying goal and that's just what
they did. After a caused turnover by junior defender Jackie
Benson (Nesconset, N.Y./Smithtown East) and a ground ball
pickup from junior midfielder Kristen Bilney (Ellicott
City, Md./Mt. Hebron) the Retrievers took a timeout with 43 seconds
remaining. UMBC's offense executed, scoring with 24 seconds to go
in regulation, as Coppolino came through with just her third goal
of the season, to knot up the contest at six apiece.
In overtime, each team only got off one shot, it was Boston
University that got its off first, but senior Kristen Mogavero's
shot was blocked. Both teams struggled to maintain possession, but
a caused turnover by Semones with 12 seconds left gave UMBC
possession and a foul by BU with five seconds left set up Harkey's
free position attempt for the victory.
The Retrievers outshot the Terriers 28-20 in the contest and the
Terriers turned the ball over 13 times in the second half.
Mason (7-2) had 10 saves in the game, while Sheridan (2-5) made
13 stops in the loss.
UMBC returns home in non-conference action on Wednesday, March
27 when it takes on Loyola (Md.). First draw is set for 7 p.m. at
the UMBC Stadium.
