Box Score Hamilton, N.Y.- The UMBC women's lacrosse team outscored host
Colgate, 9-1, in the second half and rallied for a 13-7 victory
over the Raiders at Tyler's Field.
Junior midfielder Alyssa Semones (Westminster,
Md./Westminster/Penn State) led the scoring with four goals and one
assist, while junior middie Shannon Harkey (Purcellville,
Va./Loudoun Valley/Florida) added a career-best four goals.
Sophomore attacker Abby Wilson (Bel Air, Md./Fallston)
added a goal and a game-best three assists.
The Retrievers improved to 3-1 with the victory, while Colgate
fell to 2-2.
UMBC trailed, 6-4, at the half, but scored three times in the
first 3:40 of the second half to take the lead for good. Wilson
assisted Semones for the fifth UMBC goal just 1:39 into the half
and, after the Retrievers captured the ensuing draw, Harkey tied
the score on a free position shot at the 3:17 mark. The Retrievers
controlled the next draw and Wilson posted her lone goal of the day
to give UMBC its first advantage since an early 2-1 lead.
The Retrievers would continue to roll from then, extending their
27-minute run to 8-0 as Semones added a pair of
goals and assisted on another by junior Kristen
Bilney (Ellicott City ,Md./Mount Hebron). UMBC built the lead
to 12-6 on freshman Kris Coppolino's first career goal (Winter
Springs, Fla./Winter Springs) with 13:06
remaining.
Colgate built a 6-3 first half lead before Semones scored with
5:16 to play in the half to bring UMBC to within two goals at the
break.
Bilney scored two goals for the Retrievers as they outshot
Colgate, 26-17. Semones controlled a game-high best five draws,
while Harkey connected on 3-of-4 free position shots. UMBC
senior goalkeeper Kendall Mason (Lloyd Harbor, N.Y/Cold
Spring Harbor) made seven saves for the visitors.
UMBC will now face No. 1-ranked Maryland in College Park on
Tuesday, March 5. The opening draw is set for 7:00 p.m.
