Philadelphia, Pa.- The UMBC men's tennis team split a pair of
matches in "The City of Brotherly Love" this weekend, defeating St.
Joseph's, 5-1, on Friday, before dropping a 6-1 decision to Penn at
the Levy Tennis Pavilion on Saturday.
The Retrievers and Hawks only competed in singles action on
Friday. UMBC took five of the six matches, including three in
straight sets. In the lone three-set match, freshman Justin
Carter (Randallstown, Md./National Connections Academy)
prevailed, 6-1, 2-6, 6-4 at the No. 1 singles position. Freshman
Elliot Loubatie (Paris, France) triumphed, 6-4, 4-6, (10-8) at the
No. 6 slot.
Freshman Melker Svard
(Gothenburg, Sweden) and sophomore Kamal
Patel (Germantown, Md./Seneca Valley) dropped only three
total games in their victories at Nos. 2 and 5 respectively,
winning by identical 6-1, 6-2 scores.
Senior Gaulthier
Berret (Lagny Sur Marne, France) continued his winning
ways with a 6-3, 6-3 victory at the No. 4 position.
Carter was the lone winner against the Quakers, dominating
Jeremy Court, 6-1, 6-2 at the No. 1 singles position.
Berret and Loubatie dropped tight decisions, with the former
falling, 6-4, 7-5, to Zach Katz at the No. 4 slot, while Loubatie
lost, 6-4, 7-6, to Sylvester Wee.
UMBC is now 3-5 on the season and will be off until hosting Navy
on Sat., March 9 at noon.
