NORFOLK, Va. –Reigning CCSA Swimmer of the Week senior
Mohamed Hussein (Cairo, Egypt/Victory College) once again won
multiple events and the Retrievers swimming and diving team
defeated Old Dominion, 158.5-139.5, Saturday afternoon. The
UMBC women battled, but fell to the Monarchs, 155-145, despite
three wins from senior Talor Tadena (Orangevale, Calif./Bella
Vista).
Hussein won two events on Saturday to bring his season-total up
to a team-best ten victories. After combining with sophomore
Leo Endres (Bamberg, Germany/Kaiser Heinrich Gymnasium), junior
Lauri Kaei (Harjumaa, Estonia/Tallin Secondary Science), and
classmate Evan Carey (Ponte Vedra, Fla./Grand Island) to claim the
200 medley relay, Hussein won the 100 fly (50.41) for the
second-straight week and then took the 200 IM (1:55.08) title for
the fourth time this season.
A week after earning a spot at the NCAA Zones meet, senior Tim
Perkins (Frederick, Md./Tuscarora) picked up another victory by
winning the 1-meter diving event against the Monarchs. Junior
Carson Wong (Hong Kong/Kowloon Technical School) made it a
Retriever diving sweep by scoring 305.10 for the top honor in the
3-meter competition.
Back in the pool, Endres and senior Johan Rohtla (Tallinn,
Estonia/Tallinn Secondary Science) earned sweeps in the
breaststroke and backstroke events for UMBC. Endres won the
100 event with a time of 57.95 and then took the 200 race by
touching the wall at 2:07.36. Rohtla, meanwhile, earned his
fifth and sixth wins of the year by winning the 100-yd. race
(51.95) followed by the 200-yd. event (1:51.78).
In addition, freshman Andrew McKissick (Ellicott City, Md./Mount
St. Joseph's) won his first career dual meet event by taking the
top spot in the 500 free (4:41.14).
On the women's side, Tadena led the charge with three individual
victories, in addition to helping the 400 free relay claim a
victory. The versatile senior opened her day by touching
first in the 100 breaststroke (1:05.01) and doubled her winnings
with a victory in the 100 free (51.94). Tadena then rounded
out her day with an individual win in the 100 fly (57.12), her
seventh overall of the year, and anchoring the relay squad.
Freshman Emily Escobedo (New Rochelle, N.Y./Maria Regina)
continued to shine, as well, winning two events for the fourth
straight week. After placing third in the 100 breaststroke,
Escobedo won the 200 breast event (2:19.99) and then took the
victory in the final individual event of the day, the 200 IM
(2:09.40).
The Retriever women won the final event of the day, the 400 free
relay, as sophomore Kristie Langford (Port Hope, Ontario/CDCI
West), senior Kali Dean (Ithaca, N.Y./Lansing), junior Mariana
Alvarado Gordoa (Colonia Viveros, Mexico/Universidad Valle de
Mexico), and Tadena combined for the win, but it was not quite
enough.
UMBC now has nearly three weeks off from competition before
traveling to Northern Virginia for the three-day Patriot
Invitational from Nov. 21-23 at George Mason.
