LANDOVER, Md. – UMBC sophomore
standout Mercedes Jackson(Huntingtown, Md./Huntingtown)
returned to the win column in the 60m dash as the UMBC track and
field team competed against several local rivals on Saturday at the
Prince George's Sports & Learning Complex.
For Jackson, the UMBC record holder in both the 60m dash and
200m dash, it was her third win of the season in the short
sprint.
Freshman Angel Bucci (Upper Darby, Pa./Upper Darby)
put in a personal-best effort in the mile, crossing the line in
5:13.76 to move up to seventh all-time in UMBC history.
The Retrievers garnered three top-ten finishes in both the 200m
dash and 400m dash. In the shorter distance,
junior Kirsten Jones (Brentwood, Tenn./M.L.K Magnet),
freshman D'Nique Phillip (Elkton, Md.), and sophomore Kalane' Abbey
(Laurel, Md./Laurel) finished third, sixth, and ninth,
respectively. Jones and Abbey also placed in the top-ten
in the 400 as sophomore Paulette Fogle(Washington, D.C./Bishop
McNamara) led the Retrievers with a third place finish.
Senior Amanda Deller (Aberdeen, Md./Aberdeen) once
again placed highly in the throwing events. The veteran
thrower posted a season-best in the weight throw with a toss of
15.80m (51'10.00) to finish third. She also placed eighth in
the shot put.
Senior Cameron McDearmon (Owings Mills, Md./Franklin) won
the weight throw and junior Andrew Smith (Chadds Ford, Pa./Garnet Valley) won
the 800m run as the UMBC track and field team competed against
several local rivals on Saturday at the Prince George's Sports
& Learning Complex.
Both McDearmon and Smith set season-bests in the process, as
well as qualified for the IC4A meet in March. McDearmon
bested the field with a distance of 18.38m (60'3.75") while Smith
earned his win with a quarter-mile time of 1:54.66. The
senior thrower also placed sixth in the shot put with a heave of
14.44m (47'4.50").
McDearmon's performance was just part of a successful day for
the UMBC throwers. Junior transfer Yao
Adantor (Laurel, Md./Reservoir/Morgan St./Maryland) paced
the Retrievers in the shot put by finishing second and also picked
up a top-ten finish in the weight throw with a seventh place finish
after a season-best toss of 15.99m (52'5.50"). Thor
Serafenas recorded a well-rounded day as well, finishing fifth
in both of the events after registering personal-best
efforts. His toss of 16.25m (53'3.75") in the weight
throw moved him to fifth all-time in the Retriever record book
while his distance of 14.83m (48'8.00") in the shot also boosted
his best.
Junior Ray Stinsman III (Mt. Laurel, N.J./Lenape) also
aided the Retriever throwers by taking eighth in the weight
throw. His heave of 15.26m (50'0.75") moves him into
tenth all-time in UMBC history.
Several other Retrievers earned top-ten finishes, led by
freshman Andrew Keresztes (Port Jefferson, N.Y./Port
Jefferson) who finished just three spots behind Smith in the 800m
run with a time of 1:57.87.
Senior Trae
Proctor (Brandywine, Md./Thomas Stone) could not quite
match his school record performance of last week, but did break
eight seconds again in the 60m hurdles, finishing second in the
event with a time of 7.99.
UMBC also received two top-five finishes in the 5000m run as
senior TJ Cowing (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park)
and junior Vinny DiSalvo (Washingtonville,
N.Y./Washingtonville) placed second and fourth, respectively.
UMBC continues its indoor season next week when they team splits
up for the first time of the year. Some of the Retriever
athletes will return to Pennsylvania for the Penn State National
Invitational while other will head to Virginia for the Patriot
Games at George Mason.
