BALTIMORE – The UMBC swimming and
diving team won 28 of the 32 events, including all four relays for
the fourth time this season, as the Retrievers swept local rival
Loyola, Saturday afternoon at the Mangione Pool. The men
eased past the Greyhounds by a score of 181-108 to push their
undefeated record to 6-0 while the women downed Loyola 165-116 to
move to 5-2 this season.
18 different Retrievers won at least won event on Saturday, with
five athletes gaining multiple victories.
For the men, senior Pierre De
Waal (Pretoria, South Africa/Tuks Sport/Cleveland State)
and Mohamed
Hussein (Cairo, Egypt/Victory College) once again claimed
two victories each. De Waal swept the butterfly events,
winning the 200-yd. competition with a time of 1:50.62 and
following it up with a winning time of 51.44 in the 100-yd.
event. Hussein, meanwhile, earned the sweep in the
backstroke discipline with a time of 51.44 in the 100-yd. and
1:52.79 in the 200.
On the diving boards, senior Andrew
Eckhoff (Chelmsford, Mass./Chelmsford) swept the two
diving events for the third time this
season. Eckhoff, who has already qualified for the
NCAA Zones meet to be held at Virginia Tech in March, recorded a
season-best in the 3-meter win with a score of 348.45 while winning
the 1-meter competition with a score of 321.75.
In the 200 free, sophomore Lauri
Kaei (Harjumaa, Estonia/Tallinn Secondary Science) earned
the win for the Retrievers while freshman Joe
Bieda (Potomac, Md./Winston Churchill) and
junior Reed Neuendorf (Blauvelt, N.Y./Tappan Zee)
finished two-three. Neuendorf also earned a victory of
his own, winning the 400 IM (4:10.68).
Senior Steve
Gallagher (Sinking Spring, Pa./Wilson) and
freshman Leo
Endres (Bamberg, Germany/Kaiser Heinrich Gymansium) gave
UMBC a sweep in the breaststroke with Gallagher winning the 100-yd
event (58.74) and Endres taking the top spot in the 200-yd.
competition (2:11.65).
In the freestyle, senior Alex
Moothart (Hopkinton, Mass./Hopkinton) won his first event
of the season, the 500 (4:44.67) while junior Evan
Carey (Grand Island, N.Y./Grand Island) won the 50 free
(47.12).
On the women's side, junior Talor
Tadena (Orangevale, Calif./Bella Vista) and
sophomore Becca
Pindral (Land O' Lakes, Fla./Wiregrass Ranch) each earned
two wins to pace the Retrievers. Tadena won the 50 free
(24.11) and 100 fly (58.46) while Pindral swept the breast events
with a season-best time of 1:07.76 in the 100-yd. competition and
2:27.85 in the 200-yd. race.
Five seniors each earned wins against the Greyhounds on
Saturday. Claire Barron (Lowestoft, England/Benjamin
Britten) won her third event in two weeks by winning the 500 free
(5:13.63) while Jennifer Kotonias (Burtonsville, Md./Academy of
Holy Cross) took top honors in the 200 back (2:05.90). In the
200 fly, Tara Morrissette (Somersworth, N.H./Saint Thomas
Aquinas) won her second event of the season with a season-best time
of 2:07.98.
Elise Blaschke (Washington Township,
N.J./Bishop Eustace Prep) earned her second win of the season by
winning the 100 free with a top season time of 53.40.
A pair of Retrievers claimed their first wins of the season as
senior Katie Powlen (Southborough, Mass./Algonquin
Regional) won the 1000 free (10:46.05) and freshman Carly
Deeter (Langhorne, Pa./Pennington School) won the 400 IM
(4:39.78).
Junior Klara Pavelkova (Prague, Czech Republic (Gymnasium
Pripotocni) earned her fifth win of the season, and fourth in the
100 back with a time of 57.58, a season best.
On the boards, sophomore Katie Bean (Mechanicsville, Va./Atlee) claimed the
1-meter title, her third event win of the season, with a score of
229.26.
UMBC concludes its dual meet season next weekend when East
Carolina pays a visit to the UMBC Aquatic Complex with the meet
beginning at 1:00 p.m. The Retrievers will be
celebrating Alumni/Senior Day before the start of the meet.
