BALTIMORE – Six different
Retrievers won multiple events and the women's squad swept the
relay competitions as the UMBC swimming and diving teams downed Old
Dominion, Saturday afternoon at the UMBC Aquatic
Complex. The Retriever men defeated the Monarchs
160.5-133.5 to improve their undefeated record to 5-0, while the
women rolled to a 162-127 victory to move their record to
4-2.
UMBC junior Mohamed
Hussein (Cairo, Egypt/Victory College) once again led the
way in the win column for the Retrievers, claiming three individual
event wins to bring his total up to 14 for the year. Hussein
opened his day by winning the 200 free (1:40.83) and then followed
with victories in the 100 fly (50.91) and 200 IM
(1:53.64). In addition, Hussein teamed with
junior Johan
Rohtla (Tallin, Estonia/Tallinn Secondary Science),
senior Steve
Gallagher (Sinking Spring, Pa./Wilson) and
sophomore Lauri
Kaei (Harjumaa, Estonia/Tallinn Secondary Science) to win
the 400 free relay. Rohtla and Kaei also swept the
backstroke events with Rohtla winning the 200 back (1:55.23) and
Kaei claiming the 100 back (52.72).
Seniors Pierre De
Waal (Pretoria, South Africa/Tuks Sport/Cleveland State)
and Andrew
Eckhoff (Chelmsford, Mass./Chelmsford) also picked up
multiple victories for the hosts. De Waal claimed the
200 fly (1:51.30) and 500 free (4:43.25) while Eckhoff swept the
diving events with a score of 329.25 in the 1-meter and season-best
score of 337.95 in the 3-meter.
The UMBC men also swept the breaststroke events with
freshman Leo
Endres (Bamberg, Germany/Kaiser Heinrich Gymnasium) taking
the 100-yd. event (58.96) and mid-year transfer Daniel
Cano (Madrid, Spain/IES Ortega y Gasset) winning the 200-yd.
event (2:07.48) in his first career meet.
Junior Evan
Carey (Grand Island, N.Y./Grand Island) also earned a win
for the Retrievers, his fourth of the season, taking the 50 free
with a time of 21.91.
Another team effort propelled the women to the victory, starting
and ending with victories in the 200 medley and 400 free
relays. Senior Claire Barron (Lowestoft, England/Benjamin
Britten/New Orleans) and junior Erika
Ronning (Western Springs, Ill./Lyons Township) aided both
teams to wins and also earned two individual victories
apiece. Barron swept the breast events while Ronning
took top honors in the 50 and 100 free.
Freshman Corinna Darelius (Rye, N.Y./Rye) joined the
upperclassmen as a multiple-event winner, winning both of the
diving competitions. Darelius shattered her previous
best in the 3-meter competition with a score of 270.22 while
winning the 1-meter event with a score of 253.35.
Seniors Amy
Fay (Haverhill, Mass./Haverhill) and Jennifer Kotonias (Burtonsville, Md./Academy of
Holy Cross), as well as junior Klara Pavelkova (Prague, Czech Republic/Gymnasium
Pripotocni) also won an event against the Monarchs. Fay
won the 200 free (1:55.40) while Kotonias won the 200 IM (2:08.10)
and Pavelkova earned the win in the 100 back (58.37).
UMBC now has a week off from competition before heading across
town to take on Loyola on Saturday, Jan. 19. The meet
between the Retrievers and Greyhounds is set to begin at 1 p.m. at
the Mangione Pool.
