JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – UMBC
junior Amanda
Deller (Aberdeen, Md./Aberdeen) finished 29th out of a
field of 48 in the shot put at the NCAA Track and Field East
Preliminaries on Thursday, at Hodges Stadium on the campus of the
University of North Florida.
The six-time America East shot put champion recorded a throw of
14.67m (48'1.75") en route to finishing above competitors from
Maryland, Michigan and South Carolina. Her toss landed
just short of her personal-best of 14.81m (48' 7.25"), which won
her the conference championship earlier this month.
Deller was the first of three UMBC athletes to compete at the
meet as freshman Mercedes
Jackson (Huntingtown, Md./Huntingtown) finished 44th in
the 100m dash later in the day. Sophomore Brandan McGee (Hiram, Ohio/Crestwood) will compete
on Friday in the steeplechase immediately following the 200m dash
which Jackson will also take part in.
Jackson, the America East Indoor and Outdoor Most Outstanding
Rookie who holds the UMBC record for the event, finished in 12.06
on Thursday. Earlier this season she set the school mark
with a time of 11.66 at the Morgan State Legacy Meet.
This is the first time that UMBC has had three athletes compete
in individual events at the regional meet while Jackson becomes the
first Retriever to ever compete in two separate events at an NCAA
event.
The regional meet continues on Friday beginning with the hammer
throw at 10 a.m. Jackson takes to the track again for
the 200m at 8:25 p.m. and McGee follows thereafter for the
steeplechase at 8:50 p.m.
