Day One Results
BOSTON, Mass. – The UMBC track and
field teams were back in Boston on Saturday, competing on Day One
of both the ECAC and IC4A Championships. The women's
ECAC meet is being held at the Reggie Lewis Track Center while the
men are competing at the Boston University Track and Tennis
Center.
At the women's meet, America East Most Outstanding
Rookie Mercedes
Jackson (Huntington, Md./Huntington)continued her
impressive first season for UMBC. Jackson is the top
qualifier for tomorrow's finals in the 60m dash after besting the
field in a time of 7.51. The freshman also qualified for
the event finals in the 200m dash, placing fifth with a time of
24.52.
Junior Amanda
Deller (Aberdeen, Md./Aberdeen), who was named the America
East Most Outstanding Female Field performer two weeks ago at the
conference meet, placed fourth in the shot put on Saturday, with a
toss of 14.61m (47'11.25').
Classmate Chowan
Brightful (New Market, Md./Linganore) also picked up a
top-20 finish at the regional meet, tying for 18th in the high jump
with a leap of 1.64m (5'4.5").
Down the road at Boston University, freshman Malte Bertram (Einbeck, Germany/Goethschule
Gymnasium) sits in tenth after the first day of competition in the
heptathlon with 2,682 points. Bertram picked up a fourth
place finish in the long jump, leaping 6.5m (21'4").
Sophomore Andrew Smith (Chadds Ford, Pa./Garnet Valley)
posted a personal-best in the 800m, finishing 20th with a time of
1:52.92, and staying in second place all-time in UMBC's record
book.
Senior Josh Hewitson (New Market, Md./Linganore)
qualified for tomorrow's final in the 500m, finishing in
1:03.61.
In the weight throw, junior Cameron McDearmon (Owings Mills, Md./Franklin)
placed 12th (17.56m, 57'7.5") while sophomore Chris
Nash (Parkton, Md./Hereford) took 21st with a toss of
16.84m (55'3").
Both meets continue tomorrow, with finals in the running events,
in addition to the conclusion of the heptathlon competitions.
