Women's Lacrosse Drops Decision at Towson

Box Score

Towson, Md.- The host Towson Tigers (2-0) scored twice in the first 68 seconds of play and held off a late UMBC (1-2) rally to defeat the Retrievers, 11-3, at Johnny Unitas Stadium.

Junior midfielder Lindsay Cox (High Bridge, N.J.) scored two of the Retrievers' three goals, while senior attack Emily Coady (Westminster, Md./Westminster) added the other score.

Towson's Ashleigh Rohrback scored just 23 seconds into the game and the Tigers built  3-0 lead until Cox got UMBC on the board at the 16:12 mark. UMBC got control of the ensuing draw, but turned it over quickly and Towson's Olivia Turner scored just 23 seconds later.

The Tigers led, 5-1, at the half, but both teams were thwarted offensively in the first 12 minutes of the second half. After Turner scored for TU at the 17:35 mark, Cox responded with a free position goal and Coady followed up with an unassisted tally to give UMBC momentum, trailing, 6-3, with 10:36 remaining.

The Retrievers got possession in their own end, but committed a turnover and Towson ended the brief UMBC run on a goal with 8:30 to play.

The Tigers scored three times in the final 2:36 to ensure the victory.

Towson outshot UMBC, 23-17 and controlled 10 of 16 draws. UMBC junior goalkeeper Kendall Mason got the start and suffered the loss, making seven saves and allowing eight goals in nearly 35 minutes of action. Tiger senior netminder Mary Teeters, who made 20 saves in UMBC's 10-9 win last season, turned aside nine UMBC attempts in the game.

UMBC scored only once on nine free-position shots.

The Retrievers return to action on Saturday, March 3 when they host Duquesne at noon
