Day Two Results
BOSTON, MASS. – The UMBC swimming
and diving teams each picked up individual wins on Friday at the
America East Swimming and Diving Championships at Boston
University's Aquatics Center.
After Day Two, the men's squad sits in second place with 284
points, just behind host Boston University
(285). Binghamton is third (200), while Stony Brook
(145) and Maine (109) round out the standings.
The UMBC women rank third after the second day with 233
points. Boston University sits atop the standings with 256
points, with New Hampshire trailing in second with 238.5
points. Vermont (150), Stony Brook (142), Binghamton
(127) and Maine (115.5) place fourth through seventh,
respectively.
Junior Mohamed
Hussein (Cairo, Egypt) led the charge for the Retriever
men, claiming gold in the 200 IM in a record breaking time of
1:47.64. With his time, the mid-year transfer broke the UMBC,
championship meet and America East record, in addition to stopping
the watch in an NCAA consideration time.
Junior Herol
Marjak (Harjumma, Estonia/Tallinn Secondary Science) and
classmate Mike
McGee (Chalfont, Pa./LaSalle College HS) also picked up
valuable points for the Retrievers, claiming sixth and eighth,
respectively, in the championship heat.
UMBC also picked up a win in the 500 free as junior Pierre De
Waal (Pretoria, South Africa/Tuks Sport/Cleveland State)
successfully defended his title in a time of
4:27.30. Freshman Rob
Breen (Danvers, Mass./St. John's Prep) and sophomore
Chalie Melesh (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis/Pfeiffer)placed sixth and
eighth for the Retrievers.
In the 50-yd. free, juniors Steve
Gallagher (Sinking Spring, Pa./Wilson) and Reijo
Hyvenen (Vantaa, Finland/Makelanrinteen Lukio/LSU) claimed
silver and bronze for UMBC.
In the day's final event, Gallagher and Hyvenen combined with
Hussein and Lauri
Kaei (Harjumaa, Estonia/Tallin Seconday Science) to claim
a silver in the 200 free relay with a UMBC record time of
1:21.04.
For the women, senior Abbey McKenney (Wilmington, Del./Brandywine)
reclaimed her gold in the 50 free, beating the field with a time of
23.60. Sophomore Erika Ronning (Western Spring, Ill./Lyons
Township) and senior Ashley Miller (New Smyrna Beach, Fla./New Smyrna
Beach) were also on the medal stand, finishing third and
seventh.
Miller and Ronning then combined with Klara Pavelkova (Praugue, Czech Republic/Gymnasium
Pripotocni) and Laura Tilman (Miami, Fla./Ransom Everglades) to
claim top honors in the 200 free relay to close the day with a
win.
Junior Tara Morrissette (Somersworth, N.H./Saint Thomas
Aquinas) led UMBC in the 200 IM, taking fifth place in a time of
2:04.79.
In the women's 500 free, junior Jennifer Kotonias (Burtonsville, Md./Academy of
Holy Cross) finished eighth for the Retrievers, touching the wall
in 4:55.19.
Freshman Katie Bean (Mechanicsville, Va./Atlee) picked up
and eighth place finish in the 3-meter diving competition with a
score of 223.80 in the finals.
The 2012 America East Championships continue Saturday morning at
10 a.m. for prelims in the 100 back, 100 breast, 100 fly, 200 free
and 400 IM.
