BALTIMORE – Senior Mohamed
Hussein (Cairo, Egypt/Victory College) broke the UMBC pool
record in the 200 IM with a time of 1:51.92 as the UMBC swimming
and diving team swept Howard, Saturday afternoon at the UMBC
Aquatic Complex. The men's team handled the Bison
127-111 while the women's team was victorious by a score of
125-104.
Hussein, who broke three school records in his first season with
the Retrievers, set a new standard in the 200 IM on Saturday by
passing Kevin Goh's time of 1:52.44 which was set in
2001. The senior also won the 100 back (54.09) against
the Bison to increase his individual event win total to a team-best
11 for the year.
21 other Retrievers won at least one event against Howard,
including eight athletes who picked up their first win of the
season.
Along with Hussein, sophomore Lauri
Kaei (Harjumaa, Estonia/Tallinn Secondary Science) also
won multiple events, picking up victories in the 100 breast
(1:01.50) and 200 back (1:58.13).
The women's team had three athletes win multiple events, paced
by senior Claire Barron (Lowestoft, England/Benjamin
Britten/New Orleans) who won the 200 free (1:57.09) and 200 IM
(2:12.81) for her first wins of the year. Junior Talor Tadena (Orangevale, Calif./Bella Vista) won
the 100 breast (1:11.63) and 500 free (5:18.62) while
sophomore Katie Bean (Mechanicsville, Va./Atlee) swept the
diving events with scores of 254.32 in the 1-meter and 232.05 in
the 3-meter.
Seniors Elise Blaschke (Washington Township, N.J./Bishop
Eustace Prep), Amy
Fay (Haverhill, Mass./Haverhill), Jennifer Kotonias (Burtonsville, Md./Academy of
Holy Cross), and Tara Morrissette (Somersworth, N.H./Saint Thomas
Aquinas), along with junior Erika Ronning (Western
Springs, Ill./Lyons Township), sophomore Lexi
Coon (Camden, Del./Milford), and freshmen Catherine Frediani (Ellicott City, Md./Howard)
and Kristie Langford (Port Hope, Ontario/CDCI
West) also won events for the Retrievers.
For the men, senior Andrew
Eckhoff (Chelmsford, Mass./Chelmsford) won both diving
events scoring a season-best 318.60 in the 1-meter competition
while earning a 295.80 in the 3-meter event.
Meanwhile, senior Pierre De
Waal (Pretoria, South Africa/Tuks Sport/Cleveland State)
won the 200-yd. butterfly for the third time this year with a
season-best time of 1:51.08.
In addition, classmate Herol
Marjak (Harjumaa, Estonia/Tallinn Secondary Science),
juniors Evan
Carey (Grand Island, N.Y./Grand Island), Reed
Neuendorf (Blauvelt, N.Y./Tappan Zee) and Johan
Rohtla (Tallinn, Estonia/Tallinn Secondary
Science),and sophomores Rob
Breen (Danvers, Mass./St. John's Prep) and Mark
Tracy (Chelmsford, Mass./Chelmsford) each won one event on
Saturday.
The Retrievers now have a short rest period before traveling on
Thursday, Nov. 15 for the Patriot Invitational, hosted by George
Mason. The three-day competition will consist of two
sessions each day beginning in the morning at 10 a.m.
