Annapolis, Md.- UMBC opened play at the Navy's 2012 Gold
Invitational by taking seven of nine matches against the host
Midshipmen. In the nightcap, the Retrievers captured
seven of 12 matches against the George Mason Patriots.
UMBC won two of three doubles matches and five of six singles
contests against the Midshipmen. They took three of four doubles
matches vs. the Patriots and split eight singles matches.
Freshman Justin Carter
(Randallstown, Md./Home School) was a perfect 4-0 during the
competition.
The Retrievers' top doubles tandem of senior Gaulthier
Berret (Lagny Sur Marne, France) and Carter cruised by Navy's
top duo by an 8-1 count. The No. 2 duo of sophomores Daniel Gray
(Bowie, Md./The Bullis School) and Juan Manuel Aranzazu (Ibague,
Colombia/Colegio Tolimense) also triumphed, 8-4.
All four of those players won their singles matches as well.
Carter had the toughest battle at the No. 1 flight, outlasting
Calvin Mack,4-6, 7-6 (1), 10-5.
Sophomore Kamal Patel
(Germantown, Md./Seneca Valley) won the Retrievers' fifth
match, taking a 7-6 (3), 6-1 decision over Navy's Alex Gaines at
the No. 5 slot.
Carter and Berret also won in doubles vs. George Mason, eeking
out an 8-6 decision at the No. 1 position.
Aranzazu and Gray were perfect in singles competition, as they
took straight set victories at the Nos. 3 and 5 slots
respectively.
The team concludes its fall competition by traveling to
Charlottesville, Va. for the ITA Regionals on Oct. 18-21.
