BOSTON—With the score tied at 5-5 at halftime, defending America East champion Boston University (6-4, 2-0 AE) outscored the UMBC women's lacrosse team (7-4, 1-1 AE), 8-4, in the second period and defeated the Retrievers, 13-9, Saturday afternoon at Nickerson Field in a rematch of the 2010 league title game.
The Terriers scored the first three goals of the game, but UMBC senior attack Erika Braerman (Fallston, Md./Fallston) tallied twice in 77 seconds, sparking a 4-0 Retriever run. BU regained a 5-4 lead with back-to-back goals by Danielle Etrasco, but a tally by UMBC senior midfielder Amanda Pappas (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake) with 12 seconds remaining in the half sent the teams into the break knotted at 5-5.
Junior midfielder Madi Bell (Baltimore, Md./Eastern Tech/Navy) gave the Retrievers 6-5 lead just 3:30 into the second period, but the Terriers rattled off six of the game's next seven goals to go up by a score of 11-7.
With three minutes left, senior midfielder Ashley Stodter (Silver Spring, Md./Good Counsel) curbed the BU run with her second goal of the game, and sophomore midfielder Lindsay Cox (High Bridge, N.J./Voorhees) pulled the Retrievers within two, 11-9, with 2:24 remaining.
But that was as close as UMBC would get, as Boston U. scored twice in the final 1:45 to seal the win.
Braerman, Stodter and Cox all tallied twice for the Retrievers, while junior midfielder Alicia Krause (Ellicott City, Md./Mount Hebron/Duquesne) recorded two assists. Stodter added three ground balls, three draw controls and two caused turnovers and was named UMBC's America East Player of the Game.
Etrasco led all scorers with six points on five goals and an assist and added five draw controls to earn her team's Player of the Game nod, while Molly Swain added four goals.
UMBC senior goalie Natalie Rau (Forest Hill, Md./Fallston) recorded five saves, while BU keeper Christina Sheridan stopped four shots.
The Terriers outshot the Retrievers, 24-14, and dominated the draw controls, 17-7, but UMBC held a 15-13 edge in ground balls.
The Retrievers return to action on Wednesday, April 6, when they host America East rival Stony Brook at 4 p.m.
Notes: Junior attack Emily Coady (Westminster, Md./Westminster) recorded the 100th point of her career with a first-half goal. She joins Pappas and Braerman in the 100-point club, and they are the fifth trio of teammates in UMBC history with 100 points apiece.
