Stodter's Five Goals Propel Retrievers Past American, 13-10

Box Score

WASHINGTON, D.C.—UMBC senior midfielder Ashley Stodter (Silver Spring, Md./Good Counsel) scored a career-high five goals and the UMBC women's lacrosse team (2-1) defeated American (1-2) by a score of 13-10 Saturday afternoon at the Eagles' William I. Jacobs Recreational Complex.

American jumped out to an early 3-0 lead after 10:37 of action, but Stodter put the Retrievers on the board 13 seconds later, sparking three straight UMBC goals in less than two and a half minutes that tied the score.

The Eagles led, 5-4, with 7:20 remaining, but the Retrievers scored the final three goals of the half, all in the last 3:31 of play, to take a 7-5 lead into intermission.

UMBC extended its run to 6-0 with the first three goals of the second stanza, and led, 10-5, after just 3:16 of action, before the Eagles rattled off five of the next seven tallies to pull to within two, 12-10, with 10:23 to go.

But the Retrievers shut the hosts down for the remainder of the game, and freshman midfielder Kristen Bilney (Ellicott City, Md./Mount Hebron) tallied her second goal of the contest with 5:25 remaining to seal the win.

Stodter's five goals came on just five shots. Junior midfielder Alicia Krause (Ellicott City, Md./Mount Hebron/Duquesne) recorded a career-best six points on two goals and a career-high four assists. American was led by attack Lisa Schaaf, who scored three goals.

UMBC senior goalie Natalie Rau (Forrest Hill, Md./Fallston) made her first career start and recorded seven second-half saves to stave off the AU comeback, as the Eagles outshot the Retrievers, 12-9, in the second period. Kaska Komosinski stopped five shots for American.

UMBC outshot American, 22-20, in the game, but the Eagles held a 17-10 advantage in ground balls and a 14-10 edge in draw controls.

The Retrievers return to action on Wednesday, March 2, when they host cross-town rival Towson at 4 p.m. at UMBC Stadium.
