LEWISBURG, Pa.—The UMBC men's and women's
swimming and diving teams opened their 2011-12 season with a
non-scored meet at Bucknell on Saturday, winning 21 of 44
events.
Junior Jennifer Kotonias (Burtonsville,
Md./Academy of the Holy Cross) swept the three women's individual
medley events, while sophomore Talor Tadena (Orangevale, Calif./Bella
Vista) won all three women's breaststroke events.
In addition, senior Abbey McKenney (Wilmington,
Del./Brandywine) and sophomore Johan
Rohtla (Tallinn, Estonia/Tallinn Secondary
Science) won both backstroke events for their respective teams,
while junior Andrew
Eckhoff (Chelmsford, Mass./Chelmsford) swept the
men's diving events.
Other individual winners included junior Pierre De
Waal (Pretoria, South Africa/Tuks Sport/Cleveland
State) in the men's 200 fly, freshman Lauri
Kaei (Harjurmaa, Estonia/Tallinn Secondary
Science) in the men's 200 free, sophomore Charlie
Melesh (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis/Pfeiffer) in the
men's 1,000 free, senior Kathryn Moorby (Cape May, N.J./Lower Cape
May Regional) in the women's 50 fly, junior Tara Morrissette (Somersworth, N.H./Saint
Thomas Aquinas) in the women's 200 fly and senior Ashley Sippel (Rockville,
Md./Thomas Wootton) in the women's 200 free.
The Retriever women also won both relays, as Moorby, Tadena,
senior Laura Tilman (Miami, Fla./Ransom
Everglades) and sophomore Kali
Dean (Ithaca, N.Y./Lansing) took the 200 medley
relay and McKenney, sophomore Erika Ronning (Western Springs,
Ill./Lyons Township), senior Ashley Miller (New Smyrna Beach, Fla./New
Smyrna Beach) and Sippel won the 400 free relay. In addition, Kaei,
sophomore Evan
Carey (Grand Island, N.Y./Grand Island), Rohtla
and De Waal won the men's 400 free relay.
The Retrievers return to action on Saturday, Oct. 15, when they
visit Rider at 1 p.m.
