NEW YORK-- The UMBC men's and women's track and field teams competed at the New Balance Collegiate Invitational at the The Armory in New York. The women's 4x200-meter relay team of sophomore Nicole Smalls, senior Tawana Wilson (Yorktown, Va./Tabb), freshman Ashley Ajayi (Bowie, Md./Elizabeth Seton) and senior Britney Foreman (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake) broke the UMBC record in a time of 1:43.97.
Senior Suzanne Gabriel (Falls Church, Va./McLean) crossed the line sixth in the college 5,000-meter run in a time of 17:37.16. In the 1-mile run, fellow senior Sara Parkinson (Chorley, England/Loughborough University) finished ninth in a time of 5:00.17.
On the men's side, sophomore Joshua Hewitson (New Market, Md./Linganore) finished second in the college 500-meter dash in an IC4A-qualifying time of 1:04.53. In the college 5,000-meter run, junior Chris Bowie (Bethesda, Md./Bethesda-Chevy Chase) finished third (14:51.48) and senior Andrew Madison (Edgewater, Md./South River) placed fourth (14:55.97).
The distance medley relay team of junior Chris Snyder (McConnellsburg, Pa./McConnellsburg), senior Dominic Devaud (Baltimore, Md./Archbishop Curley), freshman Aristotle Johnson (Dover, Del./Dover) and senior Michael Christmas (Invercargill, New Zealand/James Hargest College) placed sixth in an IC4A-qualifying time of 10:09.48.
The 4x200-meter relay team of seniors Mohamed Koroma (Mitchelville, Md./C.H. Flowers/Morgan State), Jason Powell (Bowie, Md./Eleanor Roosevelt), Adrian Arthur (Bowie, Md./Bowie) and Antonio Thomas (Columbia, Md./Long Reach) finished ninth in 1:30.76, just 0.25 over the school record.
The Retrievers return to action next weekend when they take part in the Rider/Lafayette Invitational.
