Women's Lacrosse Triumphs, 18-2, in Kelly Berger's Head Coaching Debut

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Junior attack Erika Braerman (Fallston, Md./Fallston) scored a career-high six points and three other Retrievers notched hat tricks as the UMBC women's lacrosse team (1-0) won their season opener, 18-2, over Jacksonville (0-1) at the Dolphins' D.B. Milne Field. The game marked Kelly Berger's head coaching debut for the Retrievers, while it was the first contest in the history of Jacksonville's women's lacrosse program.

Braerman's six points came on a career-high four goals and two assists, while junior midfielders Kristen Milligan (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake), Amanda Pappas (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake) and Ashley Stodter (Silver Spring, Md./Good Counsel) all scored three times. It was Pappas' fifth career hat trick and the fourth for Stodter, while Milligan had just two previous goals in her career. Pappas also added an assist for four points.

The Retrievers led from the start, as Stodter netted a free-position goal just 27 seconds into the game. Braerman made it 2-0 before Jacksonville attack Cassie Campasano scored Dolphins' first-ever goal with 19:13 remaining in the half.

UMBC scored six straight goals to end the period, including two more by Stodter, and led, 8-1, at halftime.

The Retrievers then scored the first 10 goals of the second stanza, including three straight by Pappas midway through the half. Jacksonville midfielder Carly Garrison closed out the scoring with 56 seconds remaining in the game.

UMBC senior goalie Kate Quick (Phoenix, Md./Maryvale Prep) recorded four saves, while Jacksonville's Karli Tobin stopped 12 shots.

The Retrievers outshot the Dolphins, 40-13, and held a 37-24 advantage on ground balls and a 15-6 edge on draw controls.

The Retrievers return to action on Saturday, Feb. 13, when they take on George Mason in Fairfax, Va.
