Women's Lacrosse Drops 17-10 Decision to 13th-Ranked Vanderbilt

BALTIMORE - The UMBC women's lacrosse team (2-2) played its second nationally-ranked team in five days, and fell to the 13th-ranked Vanderbilt Commodores (1-2), 17-10, at UMBC Stadium.

UMBC junior midfielder Amanda Pappas (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake) was the Retrievers' America East Player of the Game, leading the home team with three goals. Junior midfielder Ashley Stodter (Silver Spring, Md./Good Counsel) and sophomore attack Emily Coady (Westminster, Md./Westminster) added two goals each.

Vanderbilt was led by senior midfielder Sarah Downing, who led all scorers with three goals and three assists. Sophomore attack Hannah Clark led all goal scorers with five, while senior midfielder Carter Foote added four goals and sophomore midfielder Ally Carey had a goal and a game-high four assists.

The visitors never trailed, scoring three goals in the first 5:23 of action before UMBC junior attack Erika Braerman (Fallston, Md./Fallston) got the Retrievers on the board at the 6:21 mark. The Commodores took a pair of four-goal first half leads, but UMBC rallied in the final three minutes of the half to take the momentum into intermission. Stodter converted a Braerman feed at the 26:53 mark and Pappas scored on a free position shot with nine seconds left in the half to cut the deficit to 8-6.

But Vandy again scored the first three goals of the second frame to take an 11-6 lead ten minutes into the period. Coady would end the run at the 10:53 mark, and senior midfielder Amanda Gable (Mount Airy, Md./Glenlg) matched Clark's fourth score of the game with her first at the 18:29 mark to keep UMBC within striking distance at 12-8.

However, the Commodores went on their longest run of the day, scoring the game's next four goals to seal the victory.

Vanderbilt outshot UMBC, 33-26, and Retriever senior netminder Kate Quick (Phoenix, Md./Maryvale Prep) recorded eight saves in the game. Vandy's Natalie Wills stopped 10 Retriever shots in earning her first victory of the season.

Pappas now has 14 goals in four games, while Coady extended her goal-scoring streak to eight consecutive games.

Vanderbilt is unbeaten in four contests vs. UMBC. The Retrievers play their third consecutive nationally-ranked squad on Wednesday, when they travel to face No. 18 Towson.
