Pappas' Seven Goals Lead Retrievers Past George Mason, 16-8

FAIRFAX, Va. - Junior midfielder Amanda Pappas (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake) scored a career-high seven goals to lead the UMBC women's lacrosse team to a 16-8 victory over George Mason Tuesday evening. The Retrievers are 2-0 for the first time since 1995, while it was the season opener for the Patriots.

The game was tied, 2-2, after seven minutes of action, and both teams were held off the scoreboard until a free-position goal by Pappas with 13:25 remaining in the first half, which sparked a 5-0 UMBC run and gave the Retrievers control of the game, 7-2. A tally by George Mason midfielder Emily Ellisen with 1:24 to go made it 7-3 at intermission.

Pappas scored the first two goals of the second stanza, as the Retrievers scored another five in a row to open the period before another Ellisen goal curbed the run.

An unassisted goal by sophomore attack Emily Coady (Westminster, Md./Westminster) gave UMBC a game-high nine-goal lead, 14-5, with 8:51 remaining before the Patriots tallied three in a row.

Freshman midfielder Kerianne Allen (Ellicott City, Md./Mount Hebron) closed out the scoring for the Retrievers with her first career goal.

Coady scored three goals for UMBC, while junior attack Erika Braerman (Fallston, Md./Fallston) posted four points on two goals and two assists. Pappas had four goals in the first half three in the second and was 4-for-4 on free-position attempts.

George Mason attack Madalyn Jamison led the Patriots with five points on two goals and three assists, while Ellisen scored three times.

Senior goalie Kate Quick (Phoenix, Md./Maryvale Prep) recorded eight saves in the game, including seven in the first half, while Mason keeper Brittany Pastrana also stopped eight shots.

The Retrievers outshot the Patriots, 30-20, and held a 14-12 edge on draw controls.

The Retrievers return to action on Tuesday, Feb. 23, when they host cross-town rival Loyola in their home opener.
