LEWISBURG, Pa.-- The UMBC men's and women's track and field teams opened 2010 by winning nine events at the Gulden Relays in Lewisburg, Pa. on Saturday.
The Retrievers swept the 60-meter hurdle events with senior Camal Pugh (Clinton, Md./Oxon Hill) and sophomore Imani Colbert (Upper Marlboro, Md./C.H. Flowers) winning in 8.19 and 8.96, respectively. Pugh's time qualifies him for the IC4A Championships in March.
UMBC also swept the 500-meter dashes with sophomores Joshua Hewitson (New Market, Md./Linganore) and Ashly McClure (Baltimore, Md./Digital Harbor) claiming gold in 1:05.63 and 1:22.00, respectively. Senior Britney Foreman (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake) won the 60-meter dash in an ECAC-qualifying time of 7.66.
The men's shuttle meter hurdle team of senior Dominic Devaud (Baltimore, Md./Archbishop Curley), freshman Trae Proctor (Brandywine, Md./Thomas Stone), junior Keith Onto (Point Pleasant, N.J./Point Pleasant Boro/St. Francis (PA)) and Pugh won first in 30.53, breaking the school record by one-hundreth of a second. The women's 4x200-meter relay team of senior Tawana Wilson (Yorktown, Va./Tabb), sophomore Kiki Malomo-Paris (Northern Ireland/Glenlola Collegiate School), Foreman and sophomore Nicole Smalls also claimed gold in 1:46.20.
Senior Victor Gilreath (Catonsville, Md./Western Tech/Maryland) won the high jump with a leap of 1.99m, while qualifying for the IC4A's in the triple jump, finishing second with a mark of 14.79m. Freshman Cameron McDearmon (Owings Mills, Md./Franklin) won the shot put 16.12m, while fellow freshman Amanda Deller (Aberdeen, Md./Aberdeen) finished third in the women's shot put with an ECAC-qualifying throw of 13.70m.
The Retrievers return to action next Saturday when they take part in the New York Armory Invite in New York City.
