BALTIMORE - The UMBC women's lacrosse team (5-5, 1-0 AEC) heads to Vermont (6-4, 1-0 AEC) for an America East tilt Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Catamounts' Moulton Winder Field. Live video of the game will be available on a pay-per-view basis ($7) via B2 Networks.
Last Time Out: The Retrievers lost to cross-town rival Johns Hopkins, 8-6, Tuesday afternoon at Homewood Field. Sophomore midfielder Amanda Pappas (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake) led UMBC with two goals, while senior attack Abbey Swift (Baltimore, Md./Towson) was the only other Retriever with multiple points, as she tallied a goal and an assist. Junior goalie Kate Quick (Phoenix, Md./Maryvale Prep) recorded six saves in the game.
Who's Up Next: The Retrievers return home for a pair of conference games next week, hosting Binghamton at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, April 1, and New Hampshire at 12 p.m. on Saturday, April 4.
On the Catamounts: Vermont is 6-4 overall and 1-0 in America East play. The Catamounts are coming off a 14-8 loss to Boston College on Wednesday, which snapped their four-game winning streak. Midfielder Kristen Millar leads Vermont in almost every category, including assists (20), points (41), ground balls (35), draw controls (58) and caused turnovers (33), and she ranks second in goals (21). Midfielder Allison Pfohl is the Catamounts' top goal scorer with 26. Millar entered the week leading the nation in draw controls per game and caused turnovers per game. Goalie Olivia Hatfield has posted a 10.75 goals-against average and a .462 save percentage with 78 saves.
Last Time vs. the Catamounts: Last season, Vermont defeated UMBC, 14-5, at UMBC Stadium. The Catamounts outscored the Retrievers, 8-1, in the second half. Attack Megan Cook (Towson, Md./Towson) tallied twice for UMBC, both times off feeds from attack Meghan Keelan. Vermont midfielder Millar led all scorers with seven points on five goals and two assists, while midfielder Alison Haigh tallied four points on three goals and one helper. UMBC goalies Quick and Susie Sweeney (Madison, N.J./Madison) combined for seven saves in the net, while Vermont keeper Meaghan Hanley stopped five shots.
UMBC vs. Vermont All-Time: The Retrievers hold a 3-2 advantage in the all-time series with the Catamounts. Vermont has won the last two meetings after UMBC took the first three. The teams have met each year since the Retrievers joined the America East in 2004.
20/20: When the Retrievers scored 20 goals against Holy Cross on March 6, it was the most goals they had scored in a game since a 23-7 victory over Howard on Feb. 17, 2007. UMBC then scored 20 goals against Iona on March 17, marking the first time the Retrievers scored 20 or more goals twice in the same season since 2006, when they scored 23 against Howard and Vermont.
Century Mark: Senior midfielder Kara Dorr scored the 100th point of her career on March 21 against Stony Brook. Dorr leads the Retrievers with 27 goals and 32 points this season, and she is nearing career highs in both categories. She posted personal bests of 29 goals and 35 points as a sophomore in 2007.
Taking on the Best: UMBC will face four teams this season that were ranked in the top 20 in the most recent IWLCA Coaches' Poll, including No. 11 Vanderbilt (Feb. 21), No. 12 Boston University (April 25), No. 13 Loyola (Feb. 25) and No. 20 New Hampshire (April 4). In addition, Towson (March 3) received votes in the poll.
Underclassmen on Top: Five of UMBC's top six scorers this season are freshmen and sophomores. Freshman attack Emily Coady (Westminster, Md./Westminster) ranks second with 26 points, followed by sophomore midfielder Amanda Pappas (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake) and freshman midfielder Bria Phillips (Davidsonville, Md./Coronado (Calif.)) with 19 apiece, sophomore attack Ashley Stodter (Silver Spring, Md./Good Counsel) with 16 and sophomore attack Erika Braerman (Fallston, Md./Fallston) with 15. In addition, Coady leads the Retrievers with 11 assists, while sophomore defender C.J. Durham (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake) is tops on the team with 19 caused turnovers.
