Dorr, Pappas Lead Women's Lacrosse Past Iona, 20-6

BALTIMORE - Senior midfielder Kara Dorr (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright) scored five goals and sophomore midfielder Amanda Pappas (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake) notched her third hat trick of the season to lead the UMBC women's lacrosse team (4-4) to a 20-6 victory over Iona (1-5) Tuesday afternoon at UMBC Stadium.

Down 2-1 after 3:26 of play, the Retrievers rattled off six straight goals and 13 of 14 to end the half and take a 14-3 lead at intermission. Only a tally by Iona midfielder Casey Scully at the 19:24 mark interrupted UMBC's run.

Dorr scored the Retrievers' first three goals of the game, and her third started a stretch in which UMBC tallied three times in less than a minute.

The Retrievers made it 11 in a row and 17 of 18 with the first four goals of the second half. Iona scored three of the next four, but sophomore midfielder Ashley Stodter's (Silver Spring, Md./Good Counsel) second goal of the game with 10 seconds remaining gave UMBC the 20-6 victory.

Dorr added an assist to tie her career high with six points. Pappas also tallied a helper to finish with a career-high-tying four points, while senior attack Abbey Swift also recorded a season-high four points on a goal and a career-best three assists.

In all, 12 different Retrievers scored at least one goal, including freshman attack Beth Ann Jancuska (Sykesville, Md./Westminster), who scored for the first time in her career, and senior defender Ashley Lancer (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright) who posted her first career multi-point game with a goal and an assist.

Junior goalie Kate Quick (Phoenix, Md./Maryvale Prep) and senior Susie Sweeney (Madison, N.J./Madison) each played 30 minutes and combined for nine saves. Colleen Magri and Carlee Street also played a half apiece for Iona and made five saves total.

The Retrievers return to action on Saturday, March 21, when they conclude their six-game home stand against America East rival Stony Brook in the conference opener at 4 p.m.
