BOSTON-- Junior Sam Maccherola (Woolford, Md./South Carroll/Tennessee) broke the UMBC and America East Championship record in the 200 free as the UMBC swimming and diving teams competed in Saturday's prelim session at Boston University.
Maccherola will be seeded first in the 200 free, and will be joined by fellow junior Lindsay Sherman (Bethany, Conn./Amity), sophomore Sarah Ryan (Rockville Centre, N.Y./Oceanside) and freshman Abbey McKenney (Wilmington, Del./Brandywine) in the championship final. Sophomore Danielle Cruz (Catonsville, Md./Western Tech) and freshman Ashley Miller (New Smyrna Beach, Fla./New Smyrna Beach)will compete in the consolation final.
In the men's 200 free, UMBC will have five entrants in the championship final with senior Justin Bronson (Oshawa, Ontario, Canada/Msgr. Paul Dwyer) being the top qualifier in a time of 1:39.00. He will be joined by sophomores Eric Jones (Gambrills, Md./Arundel) and Keilan Freeman (Calgary, Alberta, Canada/Argyll Centre), senior P.J. Sterba (Frederick, Md./Gov. Thomas Johnson) and freshman Ben Wolbert (Finksburg, Md./Westminster).
In the women's 100 fly, junior Jennifer Esposito (. Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst/C.W. Post) qualified for the championship final in 55.67, just seven one-hundredths of a second over the school record, while senior Daniele Surkovich (Ellicott City, Md./Wilde Lake) and Sherman will join her in the championship final. Junior Kate Chialastri (Flourtown, Pa./Plymouth Whitemarsh) and freshman Pink Kinanti (Jakarta, Indonesia/The Bolles School) will be in the consolation final.
On the men's side, the Retrievers have four in the championship final, including juniors Matt Mattingly (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill West) and Zach Vonder Haar (Gahanna, Ohio/Columbus Academy), Sterba and sophomore Brad Reitz (Ellicott City, Md./Howard). Senior Sven Schneider (Tallinn, Estonia/Tallinn German Gymnasium) and freshman Ben Wolbert (Finksburg, Md./Westminster) will compete in the consolation final.
Sophomore Dan Weston-Dawkes (Ellicott City, Md./Wilde Lake) swam a UMBC season-best 400 IM in a time of 4:02.40, while sophomore Mat Carson (Toronto, Ontario, Canada/Silverthorn Collegiate Institute) pulled in a season-best time in 4:03.44. Freshman John Mendenhall (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill East) finished with a season-best time as well, in 4:07.49. All three will swim in the championship final tonight.
In the women's 400 IM, sophomore Rebecca Godwin (Catonsville, Md./Notre Dame Prep) will compete in the championship final after posting the third fastest time in UMBC history with a 4:29.41. Sophomore Julie Cantwell (Sinking Spring, Pa./Wilson) and freshman Laura Tilman (Miami Springs, Fla./Ransom Everglades) will race in the consolation final.
Tilman will also represent UMBC in the 100 back championship final, while freshman Kathryn Moorby (Cape May, N.J./Lower Cape May Regional) will be in the consolation final.
In the men's 100 back, senior Milos Djukic (Novi Sad, Serbia & Montenegro/Svetozar Markovic) will be seeded first in the championship final in a time of 50.29 and he will be joined by Vonder Haar and freshmen Nour Saad(Columbia, Md./Oakland Mills) and Jason Mattingly (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill West).
Matt Mattingly is the top UMBC qualifier in the 100 breast with a time of 56.96. Sophomore Kregg Deery (Ormond Beach, Fla./Spruce Creek) and Mendenhall will join him in the championship final.
On the women's side junior Tereza Kaplanova (Prague, Czech Republic/Gymnazium J.G. Jankovskeho) and sophomore Gaby Johnston (Windsor, Conn./Loomis Chaffee School) will represent the Retrievers in the championship final, while senior Joy Wilde (Greenlawn, N.Y./Harborfields) will be in the consolation final.
The finals session begins at 6 p.m.
