BOSTON-- Sophomore Brad Reitz (Ellicott City, Md./Howard) set the UMBC record in the 200 individual medley as he was the top qualifier for the finals tonight as the UMBC swimming and diving teams competed in Friday's prelim session in Boston.
Senior Justin Bronson (Oshawa, Ontario, Canada/Msgr. Paul Dwyer) qualified first for the championship finals in the 500 free with a time of 4:29.54. He will be joined by sophomore Mat Carson (Toronto, Ontario, Canada/Silverthorn Collegiate Institute) and senior Evan Roseberry (Sinking Spring, Pa./Wilson).
Reitz will be joined in the 200 IM championship finals by junior Dan Weston-Dawkes (Ellicott City, Md./Wilde Lake) and Matt Mattingly (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill West) who finished in 1:52.58 and 1:52.06, respectively.
In the 50 free, freshman Jason Mattingly (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill West) was the top UMBC qualifier for the championship finals in a time of 20.91. He will be joined by sophomore Eric Jones (Gambrills, Md./Arundel) and seniorMilos Djukic (Novi Sad, Serbia & Montenegro/Svetozar Markovic) who clocked in at 21.13 and 21.23, respectively.
Racing tonight in consolation finals are sophomroe Kregg Deery (Ormond Beach, Fla./Spruce Creek) and freshman Nour Saad (Columbia, Md./Oakland Mills) in the 500 free and senior Sven Schneider (Tallinn, Estonia/Tallinn German Gymnasium) and junior Zach Vonder Haar (Gahanna, Ohio/Columbus Academy) in the 50 free.
On the women's side, junior Tereza Kaplanova (Prague, Czech Republic/Gymnazium J.G. Jankovskeho) posted the second fastest 200 IM time in school history, qualifying second in a time of 2:05.65. Sophomore Julie Cantwell(Sinking Spring, Pa./Wilson) will also compete in the championship final with Kaplanova, qualifying in a time of 2:09.35.
In the 500 free, junior transfers Sam Maccherola (Woolford, Md./South Carroll/Tennessee) and Jennifer Esposito (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst/C.W. Post) will compete in the championship final after finishing in 4:51.96 and 4:55.81, respectively. Esposito shaved over 16 seconds off her previous best time this season.
In the 50 free, freshmen Abbey McKenney (Wilmington, Del./Brandywine) and Ashley Miller (New Smyrna Beach, Fla./New Smyrna Beach) will be in the championship final after both posted UMBC All-Time Top 10 times in 23.83 and 24.24, respectively.
Competing tonight in the consolation finals for the Retrievers will be sophomores Danielle Cruz (Catonsville, Md./Western Tech) and Gaby Johnston (Windsor, Conn./Loomis Chaffee School) in the 200 IM and senior Daniele Surkovich (Ellicott City, Md./Wilde Lake) and sophomore Rebecca Godwin (Catonsville, Md./Notre Dame Prep) in the 500 free.
Tonight will also be the finals of the women's 3-meter diving and the 200 freestyle relays. Tonight's final session starts at 6 p.m.
