BALTIMORE - Down just one at halftime, the UMBC women's lacrosse team (4-10) was outscored, 11-4, in the second period and fell to 16th-ranked Johns Hopkins (6-6) by a score of 15-7 Wednesday evening at UMBC Stadium.
Johns Hopkins midfielder Kadie Stamper tallied the Blue Jays' first three goals of the game, including two in the first 3:08 of action, before UMBC freshman midfielder Megan Linkous recorded her seventh goal of the season.
With the Retrievers trailing, 4-2, senior attack Ali Levendusky scored her first goal of the game with 10 seconds remaining in the first period to cut the Blue Jays' lead in half at intermission.
But the second half was all Hopkins, as the visitors scored five of the first six goals of the period over a 12-minute stretch. Only a pair of goals by UMBC sophomore midfielder Kelly Burgoyne interrupted the Blue Jays' scoring streak, as they went on to tally five more in a row and take a game-high nine-goal lead at 14-5 with 3:30 remaining.
Levendusky then tallied twice more in the final 3:15 of action for the 15-7 final.
Burgoyne and Levendusky accounted for six of UMBC's seven goals in the game, as they each notched hat tricks.
Levendusky has scored at least three goals in 12 of UMBC's 14 games on the season, and she has tallied 47 goals overall, tied with three players for the sixth-highest single-season total in school history. In addition, she became the first Retriever to surpass the 50-point plateau on the season since she and former teammate Kelly Fiorani achieved the mark in 2006; her 52 points are the 14th-highest single-season total in program history. Levendusky also moved into fourth place all-time at UMBC with 133 career goals.
Midfielder Paige Ibello led the Blue Jays with four goals - three over a five-minute span in the second half - while Stamper tallied three.
UMBC sophomore Kate Quick made eight saves in goal, while Johns Hopkins' keeper Lizzie O'Ferrall stopped 12 shots.
The Blue Jays out-shot the Retrievers, 35-25, and held a 15-9 advantage on draw controls, including 6-2 in the first half. Hopkins also held a 15-11 edge in ground balls.
The Retrievers return to action on Sunday, April 13, when they host No. 13 Yale at 1 p.m. at UMBC Stadium.
