ANNAPOLIS, Md.-- Both the UMBC men's and women's swimming and diving teams suffered defeats at Navy on Saturday afternoon. The men's side fell to 1-2 on the season after a 169-126 loss, while the women dropped to 1-3 after 136-105 decision.
Senior Justin Bronson (Oshawa, Ontario, Canada/Msgr. Paul Dwyer) had another outstanding day, winning the 100 and 200 meter free events with times of 52.52 and 1:53.26, respectively. Bronson also touched second in the 400 meter free in a time of 4:01.53.
Junior Matt Mattingly (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill West) put in a strong performance, winning the 100 meter breast (1:06.44) and finished second in the 100 meter fly (57.23). Freshman Nour Saad (Columbia, Md./Oakland Mills) was the only other individual winner, taking the 200 meter back in a time of 2:05.94.
In the final event of the day, the 400 meter free relay team of freshmen Eric Jones (Gambrills, Md./Arundel) and Jason Mattingly (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill West), sophomore Keilan Freeman (Calgary, Alberta, Canada/Argyll Centre) and Bronson touched first in a time of 3:28.98.
On the women's side, the Retrievers got off to an excellent start, with the 400 meter medley relay team of freshman Laura Tilman (Miami Springs, Fla./Ransom Everglades), juniors Tereza Kaplanova (Prague, Czech Republic/Gymnazium J.G. Jankovskeho) and Lindsey Sherman (Bethany, Conn./Amity), and freshman Abbey McKenney (Wilmington, Del./Brandywine) touching first in a time of 4:24.27.
After the great start, Navy came back and won 11 of the final 12 events. Sherman won UMBC's only individual event of the day, the 200 meter fly, in a time of 2:19.91.
Senior Daniele Surkovich (Ellicott City, Md./Wilde Lake) finished second in the 100 and 200 meter free events, while sophomore Rebecca Godwin (Catonsville, Md./Notre Dame Prep) touched second in the 400 and 800 meter free events.
The women's team returns to action Sunday as they host New Hampshire at 2:30 p.m. in the UMBC Natatorium.
