UMBC Swimming and Diving Drops First Dual Meet to N.C. State, Miami Women

RALEIGH, N.C.-- The UMBC men's and women's swimming and diving teams dropped their first meets of the season Saturday afternoon. The men's team fell to N.C. State 157-85, while the women's team fell to N.C. State, 187-50, and Miami, 162-79 in double-dual meet scoring.

Senior Justin Bronson (Oshawa, Ontario, Canada/Msgr. Paul Dwyer) won the 200 free in a time of 1:40.60 for the men's team's only first place finish and finished second in the 100 free with a time of 47.19.

On the women's side, junior Lindsey Sherman (Bethany, Conn./Amity) was the only winner on the women's side, finishing the 200 fly in a time of 2:05.09.

UMBC used the meet against ACC competition as a chance to gain experience and improve times, which they did in most events. The men's 400 free relay team of freshman Eric Jones (Gambrills, Md./Arundel), junior Matt Mattingly (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill West), freshman Jason Mattingly (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill West) and Bronson finished second in a time of 3:08.61, almost four seconds than the previous Retriever best for this season.

The women's 400 free relay of sophomore Danielle Cruz (Catonsville, Md./Western Tech), junior Sam Maccherola (Woolford, Md./South Carroll/Tennessee), Sherman and freshman Ashley Sippel (Rockville, Md./Thomas Wootton) set a UMBC season-best time of 3:38.53.

The Retrievers return to action Oct. 18 when they play host to Rider at 12 p.m.
