UMBC Head Women's Soccer Coach
Rick Stainton named Carly Wetzel as a volunteer assistant coach in the spring of 2024.
The center midfielder/fullback played for two years at the University of North Carolina, where she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and Spanish in 2022. The Tar Heels, the most successful women's college soccer program with 22 National Championships, advanced to the NCAA College Cup Final Four during her first season in 2020 and qualified for the NCAA Tournament in 2021.
Wetzel most recently played in the League of Ireland Women's Premier Division for Athlone Town AFC after signing her first professional contract midway through the 2023 season. She helped lead the team to a fifth-place finish in the LOI, along with the 2023 FAI Cup Championship win.
In 2022-23, Wetzel competed as a starter on the top women's football team at the University of St. Andrews while earning a master's in Global Social & Political Thought. She helped the team win the league's regular season, capture its second Scottish Championship in a row, and earn promotion to the BUCS Premier North Division.
Wetzel played for Coppermine United in the pro-am United States Women's Soccer League in 2021 and 2022. The team competed nationally in UWS League One in the 2022 season and were Mid-Atlantic Conference Champions and Eastern Conference Finalists.
Before enrolling at UNC, Wetzel was a two-year starter at McDaniel College, leading the squad to the Centennial League Tournament in back-to-back seasons in 2018 and 2019.
She attended River Hill High School and captained the squad in 2016 and 2017. The Hawks won the MPSSAA State Championships in 2014, 2016, and 2017.
