UMBC women's basketball head coach Phil Stern has named former UMBC standout Taylor McCarley, '17 as a graduate assistant coach in 2017-18. McCarley joins Carlee Cassidy Dewey, '10 and Chelsea Barker Walsh, '11 as former players for Stern on the coaching staff.
"I am thrilled to have Taylor continue with our program in this new role. She is such a bright young lady on and off the court. She will be able to contribute to our program in so many ways," head coach Phil Stern said of McCarley.
McCarley recently wrapped up a stellar four-year career with the Retrievers this past March, helping UMBC to their second straight WBI Tournament berth and a third-place finish in the America East.
She ranks fourth in scoring (1,449), third in assists (488) and third in steals (236) on the UMBC all-time lists. She is the all-time leader in free throws made (539) and free throws attempted (740).
During her career, McCarley has been named to the America East All-Rookie Team, All-Conference Third Team, as well as All-Defensive Team and All-Conference First Team twice. This past April, McCarley was named as a DI-AAA Athletics Directors Association Scholar-Athlete.
"I am very excited to be coming back into the women's basketball program here at UMBC. I am grateful for coach Stern giving me an opprotunity to see the coaching side of basketball," McCarley said on Wednesday. "Hopefully my experiences playing under coach Stern will help me assist the team because I know what he expects on and off the court. I look forward to starting a new chapter here at UMBC and giving back to the program that has given so much to me," McCarley continued.
