BALTIMORE – UMBC men's soccer remained undefeated in America East Conference play as the Retrievers held high-powered Bryant off the scoreboard in a 0-0 draw.
UMBC is now 1-0-1 in league play and 5-2-2 overall, while Bryant goes to 8-1-1, 0-1-1.
The scoreless draw is UMBC's first since March of 2021 when they battled Stony Brook for 110 minutes with no goals.
"Defensively, we executed the game plan really well," said Head Coach
Anthony Adams. "We know Bryant is a very good, possession-oriented team. We would have loved to have had the ball a little bit more and created a little more, but I think it will be an important point down the road for us in the standings."
The game was played deliberately, as Bryant possessed the ball for a majority of the 90 minutes, but created few high quality opportunities. UMBC sophomore goalkeeper
Emigdio Tormo Lopez only needed to make three saves to record his second shutout of the season.
The Retrievers' best opportunity in the first half came on a header by senior
Loc San that missed the right side of the goal in the 41'.
UMBC increased their chances in the second half, but could not convert. Senior midfielder Will Forby made a nifty flick to himself, but his shot from 14 yards out went wide of the left post. Senior forward
Taylor Calheira's hard drive from 20 yards away was saved by Antreas Hadjigavriel just inside the left post in the 79'.
The 27th-ranked Bulldogs entered the game outscoring their foes, 20-1, but have gone scoreless in a 1-0 loss to Vermont and tonight's draw.
UMBC plays its final non-conference game of the year when the Retrievers host Navy on Tuesday, Oct. 3.
