BOSTON – The America East Conference has named UMBC sophomore
Oliver Gassmann as the 2022-23 Scholar-Athlete for the sport of men's swimming and diving.
Gassmann joins Retriever junior Aysia Miller, who earned the award for volleyball last month.
The business technology administration major in maintaining a 3.86 grade-point average through the fall 2022 semester.
Outstanding Academic Statistics/Accomplishments:
- Named to 2023 College Sports Communicators' Academic All-District Team
- Selected to 2023 America East All-Academic Team
- Named to UMBC President's List (perfect 4.0 GPA) in Spring 2022
Outstanding Athletic Statistics, Accomplishments and Highlights:
- Earned 2023 America East Conference Swimmer of the Meet honors, capturing both butterfly events and the 50-yard freestyle
- He also swam on both medley relay gold medal-winning quartets and the ultimate race of the meet, a UMBC record-setting victory in the 400 freestyle relay. Hence, he earned six golds at this year's championships.
- Named the Most Outstanding Swimmer at the 2022 ECAC Winter Championships
The Scholar-Athletes were members of teams in the six championship sports which America East sponsored in the winter season including men's and women's basketball, men's and women's swimming & diving and men's and women's indoor track & field. Nominees were put forward by their institution, which could nominate up to one student-athlete per sport, then voted upon by the conference's Student-Athlete Engagement committee. Each America East Scholar-Athlete was a projected starter or prominent reserve and carries a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 3.50.
Sport Scholar-Athletes are automatically eligible for the America East Female or Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards, which will be announced in July.
