Men's Soccer Heads to Mount St. Mary's For Tuesday Evening Clash

The in-state contest is a match-up between a pair of high-scoring squads

The Retriever men's soccer team (4-0-1) faces a resurgent Mount St. Mary's (3-2-0) side on Tuesday, Sept. 13 at Waldron Family Stadium in Emmitsburg. The contest is set to get underway at 7:00 p.m. and will be broadcast on NEC Front Row.   
 
NOTABLE
  • The Retrievers are unbeaten through five matches for the first time since 2013, when they opened the campaign at 9-0-0. They have outscored their foes, 18-6.
  • UMBC received 22 votes (27th overall) in the Sept. 6 United Soccer Coaches poll. The Retrievers were No. 1 team in the Northeast Region, one place ahead of America East rival Vermont. 
  • Nationally, UMBC is tied for second goal differential (+12), tied for third in total goals scored (18), fourth in goals per game (3.60) and tied for sixth in points per game (11.0), 
  • Sophomore forward Spencer Hanks is tied for the nation's lead in goals scored (5), tied for third with 1.25 goals per game and tied for second with 2.40 points per contest. Hanks earned a spot on College Soccer News' Team of the Week for games ending Sept. 4.
  • Junior forward Taylor Calheira is tied for tenth nationally with 2.20 points per game (4g, 3a).  
  • Senior goalkeeper Quantrell Jones moved into sixth place on UMBC's all-time victories list with his 23rd career win versus FDU.
  • Calheira set a school record by scoring 10 seconds into the contest vs. St. Francis Brooklyn on Sept. 2.
  • The America East Conference tabbed UMBC sophomore forward Spencer Hanks as its Offensive Player of the Week on August 29. Hanks, who missed the entire 2021 season, rehabilitating from ACL surgery, returned to the field and scored three goals and added one assist in the Retrievers' 8-2 win over Fairfield on August 26.
  • Senior midfielder Ryan Becher has hit the 15-goal and 40-point plateaus (15g, 13a, 43 pts.) in his career in the past two games.
  • Head Coach Pete Caringi, Jr. enters his 32nd season at the helm of the Retrievers. The 2014 NSCAA National Coach of the Year now has posted a record of 314-198-80 in his tenure on Hilltop Circle. He is assisted by Associate Head Coach Anthony Adams, UMBC, '97, who has spent 25 previous years on the sidelines with Coach Caringi, after four years (1992-95) competing under the Retriever mentors. Pete Caringi III enters year No. 9 on the staff and volunteer assistant coach Sam DeBone is beginning his 24th year in his role. 
A GLANCE AT THE MOUNTAINEERS         
  • Mount St. Mary's is off to a solid 3-2-0 start and brings a two-game winning streak into the game versus the Retrievers. The Mount have already matched their win total from a year ago, when they posted a 3-15-0 mark.
  • The Mount is coming off back-to-back road wins, a 2-1 triumph at GW on Sept. 5 and a 3-1 win at Bucknell on Sept. 9.
  • The Mount broke open a 1-1 tie in Lewisburg, scoring twice in the final 3:14 of the game.
  • Junior midfielder Jesus Salazar, who scored the game-winner in the 87' at Bucknell, leads the squad with two goals and five assists. Ruben Kiers is the top goal scorer with three.
  • Junior Ethan Russell has played all 450 minutes in goal and is maintaining a 1.40 GAA.
THE ALL-TIME SERIES
  • UMBC leads the all-time series, 24-11-2.
  • The Mount discontinued the program after the 2012 season and re-instated it in 2018.
  • UMBC has won 11 consecutive matches and are unbeaten (15-0-1) in the last 16. The Mount's last win occurred in 1997.
  • Last season, Taylor Calheira scored twice, including the GWG in the 94', to give UMBC a 2-1 overtime victory as the series resumed.
 
UP NEXT
  • UMBC returns home and will welcome St. Peter's on Saturday, Sept. 17. The men's soccer program will celebrate the ten-year anniversary of 2012 team, which won the America East Championship and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Championship.
