Hussen Wins 5,000m at Liberty Open to Pace Men’s Track and Field

Jafar Hussen led the way for the Retrievers at the Liberty Open on Saturday with his first place finish in the 5,000m. Several Retrievers hit top marks on Saturday as the Retrievers continue to prepare for the America East Championships.

Lynchburg, Va.-- Jafar Hussen led the way for the Retrievers at the Liberty Open on Saturday with his first place finish in the 5,000m. Several Retrievers hit top marks on Saturday as the Retrievers continue to prepare for the America East Championships.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Hussen was the lone Retriever winner on the men's side, clocking in at 15:00.83 in the 5,000m. Will Sackowicz finished the race in seventh place with a time of 16:12.69.
  • Sam Brosh earned a top ten finish, taking sixth in the mile at 4:13.10. Cameron Hindle finished fourth in the 3,000m in 8:19.03 to round out the distance runners.
  • Shavar Staats led the sprinters earning a third place finish in the 60m dash with a time of 6.89. Nicolas Alphonse earned a spot in the semis of the 60m hurdles where he finished 12th in 8.53. Alphonse earned his spot by winning his prelim heat.
  • Jayo Adegboyo and Michael Arnold went 11-12 in the 400m with times of 50.50 and 50.85 respectively.
  • Tyler Dregley and Mulisa Reggasa went 7-8 for a pair of top ten finishes in the 800m with times of 1:57.76 and 1:57.96.
  • The 4x400m relay team of Arnold, Alphonse, Marquis Miller, and Adegboyo finished fifth in a time of 3:23.19.
  • In the field, Ibrahim Khairat had a pair of top ten finishes, taking eighth in the long jump (6.72m) and ninth in the triple jump (13.51m).
  • Toren Burr rounded out the field athletes with his third place finish in the weight throw at 16.26m.

UMBC will continue the indoor campaign next Friday, Feb. 11 at the Fastrack National Invite on Staten Island.
