Women's Lacrosse Falls to Lehigh, 15-7

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The UMBC women's lacrosse team dropped a 15-7 matchup against the Lehigh Mountain Hawks on Saturday afternoon. Lehigh moves to 2-2 on the season as UMBC falls to 2-3.

 

STRAIGHT FACTS

Senior Catherine Sims (Elkridge, Md./Howard) put the Retrievers on the board first at the 28:24 mark with a free-position goal.

 

Lehigh responded shortly after by scoring two goals of their own before Zoe Pekins (Columbia, Md./Columbia) tied the game up with 23:16 on the clock.

 

The Mountain Hawks added another pair of goals to the scoreboard before Payton Van Kirk (Ocean City, Md./Stephen Decatur) found the back of the net off an assist from Kelsey Weishaar (Sykesville, Md./Century) to put the score at 4-3 in Lehigh's favor.

 

After Lehigh scored again to make it 5-3, Lauren McDonald (Catonsville, Md./Catonsville) controlled the ensuing draw and moments later, Pekins netted her second of the day, again off the stick of Weishaar.

 

The Mountain Hawks netted another goal, but the Retrievers score two-in-a-row to tie the game up at 6-6. First, Van Kirk scored her second off the day, this time off an assist from Grayson Corbett (Ellicott City, Md./Wilde Lake) before McDonald placed a free position shot into the back of the net.

 

Lehigh added one more goal in the final three minutes of the first half, taking a 7-6 advantage into halftime.

 

Out of the break, the Mountain Hawks rattled off four straight goals before Brittany Levine (Middletown, Md./Middletown) ended the run with a free position goal at the 17:19 mark in the second half to cut Lehigh's lead to 12-7.

 

Lehigh added three more goals at the end of the game for the final 15-7. Sims and McDonald each had good looks for the Retrievers down the stretch, but the Mountain Hawks' goalie was able to make the saves.  

 

BY THE NUMBERS

5 - Sims led the Retrievers with five shots on the day.

 

2 - Van Kirk and Pekins scored two goals on the day; Weishaar dished out two assists; Sims and Jenna Baverman each had two caused turnovers.

 

1 - Freshman Sophie Shucosky (Lutherville, Md./Maryvale Preparatory) made her debut as a Retriever, playing for most of the second half and making two saves on the day; Tolino finished the day with one save in 38:14 minutes.

The Retrievers will return to Pennsylvania on Wednesday, March 6 to take on Bucknell at 4 p.m.
