Track and Field Returns to Fairfax for Mason Spring Invitational

Baltimore, Md. – UMBC track and field travels to George Mason for the second time this season on Saturday to take part in the Mason Spring Invitational.  They will look to build off their strong showing last weekend.

Last Time Out (Sam Howell Invitational):

The women were led by sophomores Bridgett Redding and Briana Roberts took first and second respectively in the 800m, crossing the line in 2:18.19 and 2:19.50.  Senior Funmi Daramola also took second in the 400m with a time of 57.41, and took seventh in the 200m, finishing in 25.11. 

Junior Amani Wallace took sixth in the 400m with a time of 57.84.  Wallace also helped the 4x100m team of herself, Collese Daley, Erin Patrice, and Kara Patrice take third with a time of 47.17.  Both Erin and Kara took top ten finishes in the 100m as well, taking sixth and eighth respectively.  Erin had a time of 12.45 and Kara had a time of 12.54.  Yinka Alabi took tenth in the same event with a time of 12.72.

In the 5,000m, junior Kelsey Ponton took fifth with a time of 17:48.62.  The junior set a personal best with this time.  In the field, senior Ricca Graham earned a fifth-place finish in the hammer throw with a distance of 41.94m, which was good for ninth in school history.

For the men, senior Tony White took first in the javelin for his second straight strong performance.  He threw a distance of 65.47m.  Classmate Russell Bowman took third in the shot put with a distance of 16.67m, which placed him third in UMBC's history.  Senior Musanga Bukasa recorded a triple jump of 12.90m to take fourth place.  Andrew Haberman threw the tenth best hammer throw, tossing a distance of 49.51m.

On the track, freshman Erik Jenks finished second in the 800m with a time of 1:58.97, and Taylor Baranoski set a personal record with a time of 1:54.61 with a negative split of 57.3/57.2.  In the 400m hurdles, junior Kyle Kulp also earned second with a time of 59.60, and senior Samuel Enomanna took sixth with a time of 1:00.41.

Sophomore Brian Nelson took third in the 200m with a time of 22.16, while junior Nathan Nadal also took third in the 5,000m with a time of 15:09.21.  This time is also a personal best for Nadal.  In the same event, Matt Bennett earned sixth with a time of 15:23.26.

In other long distance events, junior Matt Kingeter took tenth and moved into fifth in UMBC history with a time of 31:10.10 in the 10,000m event.  Elijah Hawkins ran the tenth fastest time in the same event with a time of 31:44.66.

The Retrievers will return to Princeton, N.J. next weekend for the Larry Ellis Invitational on Saturday, April 21st.
