Swimming and Diving Has Strong Showing in Win Over Seton Hall

WEST ORANGE, N.J. – In the first scored meet of the year, the UMBC men's and women's swimming and diving teams picked up two wins to open the season, defeating Seton Hall on Friday afternoon.

"I'm super proud of the team today. They won the key events and the depth set us up well to succeed in our first scored meet of the season," said head coach Chad Cradock.

The ladies won their portion of the meet, 156-144, in a comeback fashion after being behind with the last few events ahead of them.

"Our ladies fought hard in a back and forth meet," said Cradock. "With two events to go, we were down by four points. Our individual medley swimmers got it done and allowed us to take it to the last relay where both our A and B relay went one-two."

In the 200 IM, junior Laura Massicotte (Quebec City, Quebec) finished first with a time of 2:10.64 while classmate Alesha Knight (Ottawa, Ontario) finished fourth with a time of 2:11.68.

In the 400 free relay, the team of Hania Moro, Britt Driscoll, Allison Atkinson, and Natalija Marin came in first place after winning the race in a time of 3:34.63. Fellow Retrievers Maddy Popalis, Emily Vance, Cassandra Willie, and Megan Allison finished second with a time of 3:37.01 and helped UMBC complete the comeback.

Earlier in the meet, Vance, Popalis, Marin, and Massicotte took second in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:48.38.

Moro won three individual events on Friday in the 200 free (1:54.71), 500 free (5:07.01), and 1,000 free (10:29.49). Popalis took first in the 200 breast with a time 2:25.52 and the 100 breast, touching in with a time of 1:06.34.

Marin also had two wins, picking up first in the 200 fly (2:03.91) and the 100 fly (57.25). Vance finished first in the 100 back, touching in with a time of 58.42.

On the boards, sophomore Abby Biddulph (Egg Harbor City, N.J.) took second in both the 1 meter dive (212.18) and 3 meter dive (194.63).

The men earned a 167-128 victory over Seton Hall after coming out strong and sticking to their goals.

"Our men came out with a vision and stayed true to it all day. I am super proud of each of them," said Cradock.

The team of Alexander Gliese, Luis Galvan, Philip Adejumo, and Jared Vance started the meet with a second place finish in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:34.56.

Freshman Kai Wisner (Syracuse, N.Y.) and junior Haythem Abdelkhalek (Ariana, Tunisia) finished one-two in the 1,000 free, with Wisner touching in with a time of 9:42.13; Abdelhalek finished in a time of 9:48.51.

Sophomore Ilia Rattsev (Moscow, Russia) won three events on the day in the 200 free (1:40.44), 100 free (45.82), and 50 free (21.15). Gliese also had top finishes in the 100 back (50.84) and 200 back (1:50.25).

Wisner earned a first-place finish in the 500 free, touching in with a time of 4:42.05. Adejumo also picked up two wins in the 200 fly (1:54.03) and 100 fly (50.66).

On the boards, UMBC swept the top three spots in the 1 meter and 3 meter dives, with junior Elijah Wright (Baltimore, Md./Loyola Blakefield) earning the top spot in both disciplines.

The Retrievers are back in the pool Friday, October 13 when they host Navy at 4 p.m. at UMBC Aquatic Center.
