Burlington, Vt.—UMBC men's track and field finished second at the America East Championships, as senior Hassan Omar won his second individual title of the weekend. The 4x100m relay team shocked the field, getting a big run in the third leg by Daryian Miles to propel UMBC to gold. Omar earned Most Outstanding Track Performer once again this year, winning two individual medals.
Omar waited till the end of the race, but pushed himself ahead to win gold in the 5,000m run. The senior finished in a time of 14:52.28, two seconds ahead of second place. Urgy Eado earned a bronze medal in the 1,500m run, crossing the finish line in a time of 4:00.30.
Erick Soetje finished sixth in the 400m dash, finishing in a time of 48.47. Daryian Miles and James Oakley III also earned points in sprint events. Miles took home fourth in the 100m dash (10.68) and fifth in the 200m dash (21.71) while Oakley finished fourth in the 200m dash (21.50).
Jamal Cody and Purcell Freeman went two-eight in the 110m hurdles with times of 14.52 and 15.52 respectively. Darrius Oxley and Samuel Enomanna earned points in the 400m hurdles with Oxley finishing third (55.67) and Enomanna taking seventh (58.16). Nick Johnson was the final individual to earn points, taking seventh in the 800m run with a time of 1:54.96.
Afees Abolurin, Oakley, Miles and John Oputa out-sprinted the team from Albany for gold in the 4x100m relay. Miles had a strong run in the third leg to push the Retrievers out front, and Oputa finished it off with a time of 41.41. Andrew Kereszetes, Rami Phillips, Rhys Burgett, and Eado took third in the 4x800m relay with a time of 7:45.52.
The final relay quartet of Soetje, Oxley, Niko Coaxum and Noel Njem took fourth in the 4x400m relay in a time of 3:20.22.
In the field, Isahq Rana and Vincent Rentzsch went five-seven in the discus with throws of 45.19m (148'3") and 43.59m (143') respectively. Thomas Johnson finished fourth in the triple jump with a jump of 14.08m (46'2.5"). Rana completed the day with a silver medal in the shot put competition, with a throw of 15.57m (51'01").
The men finished in second place as Albany repeated as champions for the 12th straight year. Binghamton, UMass Lowell, Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine, Stony Brook and Hartford rounded out the field.

The Retrievers will be back in action next weekend at the ECAC/IC4A Championships Friday through Sunday in Princeton.
